A Message from the Office of Emergency Management

Welcome to 2023!

In Emergency Management, we often say, “the only constant is change.” We also talk about how society figures out what the “new normal” will be after disasters happen. We are slowly reaching that understanding as we learn to live with COVID-19. Thus, the Kirkland OEM is pleased to announce new ways to be engaged, build your knowledge, and refresh your skills.

We are excited to announce the new initiatives that we have created for 2023!

We are starting a monthly series of personal preparedness activities and lessons delivered right to your home or work with our new video series. Click on the video or the link below to check out our first edition of the “Let’s Chat” series with our Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, Carly Pacekonis!

Future videos will continue to cover essential preparedness topics like creating communication plans for you and your loved ones, extreme weather preparedness, and even special considerations like pet preparedness.

In addition to the general public preparedness topics, we are also beginning a monthly CERT Continuing Education (CERT CE) program for CERT Graduates. The continuing education will be a combination of video-based learning and in-person hands-on skill refresher opportunities. Over the year, we will cover the basic information from the CERT course and dive deeper into other topics you want to learn more about relating to disaster preparedness and response. Look forward to getting support in testing your emergency disaster plans, guest speakers, and more hands-on training with live fire training, search and rescue, and cribbing!

Be sure to check our website at www.kirklandwa.gov/CERT to stay up to date on all the upcoming activities!

The Kirkland Emergency Communications Team (KECT) will return to participating in our 5th Saturday drills, and we are planning on meeting in person at least once a quarter.

And finally, we will be asking for your input as we transition the Map Your Neighborhood program into the Meet Your Neighbor program. Look for future emails for ways that you can engage in the redesign of our community-oriented program!

There is a lot planned for this year, and we look forward to all of you engaging in your own way!
