From November 1 to 30, single family households in Kirkland can put out up to 5 extra yard waste bags per collection day for free. Fill your gray cart first, then put out extra leaves in paper bags or durable containers labeled “yard waste.” Plastic bags are not accepted.
Rake leaves from drains to prevent flooding and set out for FREE extra yard waste collection during November.
The Pacific Northwest is known for our wet winters, but some days are certainly wetter than others.
Here's how you can prevent flooding and flood damage during storms:
Clear Leaves from Storm Drains
Leaves and debris can block rainwater from flowing into storm drains and can cause localized flooding. City crews work to keep storm drains clear, but with over 15,000 storm drains in Kirkland, we could use your help. With your help, we can keep streets safe and clear and can reduce property damage caused by flooding.
- Before, during and after a storm, check the storm drains near your home or business and make sure they are free of debris.
- Do not rake or blow leaves into the street. The City may bill you for clean-up if found doing so.
- Do not remove grate from storm drain opening. This does not unclog the drain and creates hazardous conditions.
-
Call our 24/7 hotline at 425-587-3900 if flooding is severe and you are unable to clear the drain.

The simple act of recycling has many benefits to the environment, economy, and society! Recycling is a sustainable action many of us can take every day. By learning what goes into the recycling and making sure your recyclables are clean and dry you help to close the recycling loop. Let’s celebrate the many benefits of recycling on America Recycles Day, November 15th and everyday by recycling responsibly. Wonder if something is recyclable or how to recycle it? Ask us by emailing recycle@kirklandwa.gov or calling 425-587-3812.
Recycling provides job opportunities, saves energy, and saves resources. Producing products from virgin materials takes more energy than producing products from recycled materials. For example, recycling plastic results in 70% energy savings while 40 boxes of 100% recycled paper saves 17 trees. According to data from the National Recycling Coalition for every 10,000 tons of waste, recycling creates 36 jobs – compared to six jobs for landfilling and one job for incinerating. Kirkland meet Betty. Betty enjoys long walks along Juanita Bay and peaceful strolls through Finn Hill. Betty wants to remind all of us dog owners that as we enter the rainy season, it's even more important to always scoop, bag, and throw away your dog's waste. Scooping helps keep our shoes, parks, creeks, and lakes clean and helps keep other dogs healthy.
