Don't Fall Behind! Read ahead for preparedness reminders.

The trees are changing colors, the mornings are getting cooler, and the days are getting shorter. Fall is finally upon us, which means two important events are coming up: The Great ShakeOut and Daylight Savings Time!

Washington Great Shakeout 2022Are you ready to drop, cover, and hold on?
Today, October 20th, is the day of the Great ShakeOut! At 10:20 A.M., it's time to practice your earthquake safety plan. Did you miss it? Don't worry! You can practice the drill at any time, anywhere, and with anyone you choose. The ShakeOut is also a great time to remind your loved ones about your family’s emergency communication plan.

Our team created a short video to teach you about earthquake risks in the local area. We also interviewed Kirkland’s Building Officer, Kurt Aldworth, to learn about his thoughts on building safety and the importance of retrofitting older homes and commercial buildings.

Get Ready to Shakeout

Looking ahead, it is a great time to start thinking about Daylight Savings Time, which is happening on November 6th this year. This day is a great reminder to go through and update your emergency preparedness kit! It’s recommended to do the following at least twice a year:

  1. Change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
  2. If you have any ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers in your home, check that they are charged and tip the extinguisher upside down to keep the extinguishing agent loosened and ready for use. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, now would be a great time to get one!
  3. Check the expiration dates on your shelf-stable foods and swap out your water supply to stay fresh.

2022 Summer Market PicturesWe are excited to get back to community engagement by attending summer markets and in-person preparedness presentations. The OEM team completed an extensive planning effort where we scheduled an entire year’s worth of activities, classes, and public outreach events. Keep an eye out for future newsletters to hear more opportunities to learn about preparedness in 2023!

Kirkland’s OEM staff is actively preparing for Fall and Winter weather by checking supplies, confirming notification lists, and preparing our homes and cars for wind, rain, snow, and ice. It is an excellent time for you to start begin preparing as well!

Our CERT Class 30 graduated 18 participants on October 1, 2022! This was the first entirely in-person session since 2019, and we were able to use all the fun fire training props at Station 26.

We were fortunate to have several City Councilmembers join the course this time, once again demonstrating their commitment to the community first!

The Finn Hill neighborhood was well represented for this session; perhaps it will be your neighborhood filling our next class in May of 2023?
