Lunar New Year - Save the Date| January 28

Lunar New Year

Kirkland Parks and Community Services invites you to save the date and celebrate the Lunar New Year on January 28, 2023, from 2-4 pm at the Peter Kirk Community Center at 340 Kirkland Ave in Kirkland. Activities include entertainment, food, sharing experiences, crafts, and storytelling. 

Event elements include an emphasis on education and how the celebration is influenced by various cultures such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Singaporean, Laotian, Filipino, Malaysian, Thai, and Indonesian.

If you are interested in contributing your talents to this event, the planning team is seeking volunteers. Ways to help include:

  • Sing, dance, or play traditional music
  • Share in a small group setting how your family celebrates Lunar New Year
  • Help children write Lunar New Year sentiments in different languages
  • Lead children’s crafts area
  • Interpret stories in our storytelling circle
  • Wear traditional clothing

Tiny Touches

Tiny Touches is an interactive parent/child class focusing on balance, hand-eye coordination, and cognitive growth. This fun introduction to fencing utilizes foam swords during instruction.

Peter Kirk After School Camp | Ages 5-12

After School Camp

After-school camp is a quality after school experience for children grades K-5. Our staff offers a unique blend of recreation and educational activities in a relaxed, fun and safe environment. Transportation is available from Peter Kirk Elementary only, but otherwise is not provided.

Camp will follow the Lake Washington School Calendar and will be closed on days that school is not in session, this includes inclement weather closures.

Monthly Installments - Full fee for your initial month is required upon registration (fee includes a $25 deposit). Additional months will be reserved by paying a $25 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit per month per child. Monthly installment option is not available for online registration. The remaining balance due must be paid by the 15th of the previous month, otherwise the reserved spot and deposit will be lost. This option is only available for those registering for the full school year.

Become a Tracker! Train in wilderness survival, tracking and stealth for a full season. Blend in with the forest, learning the ways of the wild. Seek out your Rangers camp, a place where nature reveals the secrets of forest craft.

Trackers Earth Outdoor Adventure Apprenticeship: Hike, Paddle, Climb

Join Trackers for an epic outdoor adventure! Apprentices, with a team of friends, learn from Trackers Earth mentors fundamentals of navigation, boat and water safety, rock climbing, and backcountry exploration skills. They learn wilderness survival, boating and climbing skills during three separate sessions over nine months (1 class approximately per month) with registration for each of the three sessions recommended for best results. Program drop-off and pick-up at McAuliffe Park, however, this program travels by Trackers Earth bus or van to various parks in the region.

Northwest University's Annual Basketball Camp | Grades 3-6

Kendo | Ages 8+

Kendo

Come join us to learn the ancient Japanese art of sword fighting! Kendo is a coed martial arts sport based on Samurai traditions requiring both mental and physical discipline.

Class is open for ages 8 and up. Beginning classes are taught in a roughly 10-week curriculum, focusing on the fundamentals, starting with proper etiquette, footwork, and sword handling.

Beginning students should arrive at least 20 minutes early for the first class. Please wear loose-fitting exercise clothes, and please note that Kendo is practiced barefoot. Beginners are required to pay a $60 additional equipment fee for a bokken (wood sword), and a shinai (bamboo sword). A sword bag will also be available for purchase with the swords for an additional $10, but this is optional. Students continuing beyond the beginner class will have the opportunity to spar in armor with more advanced students. This class is taught all together, kids and adults. Beginner or Intermediate/Advanced Classes available.

Teen Basketball Open Gym | Ages 13-18

Teen basketball

On the 2nd Thursday of the month, Kirkland Parks and Community Services is hosting Teen Basketball Open Gyms at Kirkland Middle School. Come learn the basic rules, skills, and techniques involved in basketball. Our Volunteer Coaches will strive to provide all players with the opportunity to create friendships, learn new skills and have fun!

Cardiobox: a 45 minute total body workout session, using the basic principles of boxing, and various body conditioning/strengthening exercises. This class is designed for anyone with or without prior boxing experience. In this class, you will learn the different strikes used in boxing, along with footwork, body movement and defense.

Meditation: A Journey to the Present-Virtual |Ages 18+

Meditation

Explore ways to lay a solid foundation for self-sufficient meditation practice by introducing proper postures, breathing, and body-scanning techniques. Learn to effectively release stress and better manage physical/ emotional pain. Sight, sound, and taste will be incorporated in the meditation practice to set the body and mind free from anxiety, depression, and personal trauma, bringing our awareness to the present moment and enjoy living.
