The City of Kirkland is partnering with the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to perform litter pickups in Kirkland along I-405 and State Route (SR) 520. WSDOT relies on the Department of Ecology (DOE) Summer Youth crews to remove litter, but due to Covid-19, DOE litter operations have been severely limited.
What does it mean to volunteer through WSDOT’s "Adopt-A-Highway” program? WSDOT supplies litter bags, pickers, hard hats, safety vests, cones, and road work signs to all volunteers. They prefer groups between 2-6 people, and do not allow volunteers in the medians. Once the segments of I-405 and SR520 have been determined safe for volunteers, WSDOT creates an agreement for litter picking, sends the needed paperwork as well as a link to a required safety video, and then you’re off to the clean-up!
If you, or someone you know might be interested in helping clean up Kirkland’s segments of I-405 and SR520 and want to participate in a litter pick up event, please respond via email to Frank O’Neal at ONealFA@wsdot.wa.gov – Frank is WSDOT’s Adopt a Highway coordinator for the Kirkland area.

The Green Kirkland Partnership needs your help this summer with volunteer watering to nurture baby native plants in the natural forested areas of Kirkland’s parks. This is a great opportunity to spend time in the cool and serene forest while helping your local park!
Volunteers in this role commit to serving 1 -2 hours per week, during most weeks June through August on their own time and schedule. Volunteers aged 18 and over can serve solo while volunteers age 14-18 need to serve in teams (you bring your buddy). Volunteers under age 14 will need to serve alongside a parent/guardian.
Volunteer should be comfortable carrying water cans or hoses off-trail over uneven terrain to water baby trees in our forests. A brief orientation and service agreement are required for this fun summer volunteer role.
Contact Green Kirkland via email for more details if you are interested in this ongoing volunteer commitment: greenkirkland@kirklandwa.gov
