Parks Department expands Recreation Scholarship Program

Parks Department Logo

The Kirkland Parks and Community Services Department’s scholarship program now includes more opportunities for Kirkland residents to receive income-based scholarships to access all programs.

Kirkland residents, regardless of age or ability, can now apply for scholarships to cover 50 percent, 75 percent or 95 percent of any Parks Department recreation program. Previously scholarships were only available up to 25 or 50 percent of the cost of the program. All scholarships are based on income verification. Scholarship applications are available online at http://bit.ly/KirklandRecScholarship.

“Income shouldn’t be a barrier to people being active,” said Councilmember Toby Nixon. “We hope that these scholarships will help ensure that every Kirkland resident has the opportunity to access programs where they can be active and social in a positive environment.”

Funding for the increased scholarship opportunities have largely come from donations from corporate employee giving programs that have been collected over time. However, the new scholarship program makes it possible for any community members to donate to the scholarship fund.

“Donating to the scholarship fund is a great way for community members to support other community members. Your donation will have a tangible impact on one of your neighbors,” said Nixon.

All information provided in the application is confidential.  Scholarships are available to all residents of the city of Kirkland.  Residents may apply for scholarships for themselves or any member of their household of which they have guardianship and verification.

Residents who wish to donate to the scholarship program can do this online through the City website at http://bit.ly/KirklandDonate.

What's coming up at City Council

What’s Coming Up at City Council

The Kirkland City Council holds its next business meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7. Normally scheduled on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, next week’s meeting takes place on Wednesday so that our elected officials can participate in our community National Night Out events on August 6. In advance of the official agenda, which will be available in its entirety on the City website later this week, here are a few notable items slated for discussion:

Totem Lake Gateway Contract Award

The Council will vote to award the construction contract for the Totem Lake Gateway Project, a multifaceted transportation improvement project that will rehabilitate Totem Lake Boulevard between N.E. 124th Street and 120th Avenue N.E., overlay 120th Avenue N.E. from Totem Lake Boulevard to N.E. 128th Street, construct new 10-foot sidewalks along the east side of 120th N.E., and overlay Totem Lake Boulevard from N.E. 124th Street to N.E. 128th. This project addresses long standing deficiencies in the structural integrity of Totem Lake Boulevard and its construction is largely funded by a $4.8 million grant awarded by the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB).

Rose Point Lift Station Contract Award

Council will vote to award a construction contract for the Rose Point Lift Station Improvement Project, which replaces an aging wastewater lift station built in the early 1970s with a modern, lower maintenance facility. This $2.2 million project will reduce lift station operating costs, allow for remote system monitoring, and help provide reliable, efficient and effective wastewater service to residents.

Future Metro RapidRide 1027 Briefing

The Council will receive a briefing from City staff on the planned King County Metro (Metro) RapidRide line 1027, a new bus rapid transit service expected to begin in 2025. Founded in 2010, RapidRide bus lines are faster than conventional bus lines because they stop less frequently, utilize bus-only bypass lanes and transit signal priority. Currently, Metro operates six RapidRide routes, named Line A through Line F, and plans to add seven additional routes by 2027.  Corridor 1027 is a through-Kirkland route connecting Totem Lake to South Bellevue/Eastgate and will be named “Line K.”
