Three Ways to Engage your City

1. Help the City create our first Sustainability Master Plan

The City is creating a Sustainability Master Plan to coordinate all of the City’s efforts of environmental, economic, and social sustainability. You are invited to a Sustainability Forum at City Hall from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.  (You're encouraged to RSVP, but it is not required.) At the Sustainability Forum, you'll have the opportunity to brainstorm actions the City might undertake to support sustainability in Kirkland. This forum will be highly interactive and will be structured around the eight draft focus areas for the plan:

  • Energy Supply & Emissions
  • Buildings & Infrastructure
  • Transportation and Land Use
  • Sustainable Materials Management
  • Natural Environment & Ecosystems
  • Sustainable Business
  • Healthy Community
  • Sustainable Governance

Please watch the video below for more information on the Sustainability Master Plan. There is also a short online survey about the Sustainability Master Plan. Your responses to the survey will help inform how City staff structures the Sustainability Forum and the Master Plan.

Questions about the forum? Please feel free to contact David Wolbrecht at 425-587-3011 or dwolbrecht@kirklandwa.gov.

2. Participate in shaping the future of the Market, Norkirk and Highlands Neighborhoods

The City of Kirkland Planning and Building Department, in coordination with the neighborhood associations in each area, is tasked with updating the Market, Norkirk and Highlands Neighborhood Plans and Market Street Corridor Plan in the City’s Comprehensive Plan in 2019-2020. Now is the best opportunity for residents, property owners, visitors, and business owners within these three neighborhoods to influence the future growth of these areas.

You're invited to attend the Neighbor to Neighbor Workshop on Wednesday, June 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the City Hall Peter Kirk Room (lower level) at 123 Fifth Avenue, Kirkland.

The evening will include separate group discussions for the Market, Norkirk, and Highlands neighborhoods and Market Street Corridor. Participants will discuss a variety of topics that will shape the future of these neighborhoods. Neighborhood plans establish the long range vision for each neighborhood over the next 20 years, define how that neighborhood or corridor might best manage traffic, meet predicted household and job growth, and incorporate vital services in context with the citywide goals and policies in the Comprehensive Plan.

For more information visit the project webpage, sign up for email announcements, or participate in the online survey from June 1 to June 30.

3. Provide feedback on three master plan concepts for 132nd Square Park

Join us on Thursday, June 20, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 13220 Be 132nd St., to learn about three master plan concepts for 132nd Square Park. Your input will help inform the final master plan.

The City of Kirkland is designing a project to better manage stormwater in the Totem Lake/Juanita Creek basin. At the same time, the City is planning to invest in the 132nd Square Park's ballfields, trail system and playgrounds. To ensure that those investments are compatible with the community's vision and the City's goals for the park, Kirkland's leaders are engaging the community in a master plan process.

For more information contact Mary Gardocki, Park Planning and Development Manager at 425-587-3311.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity of the City of Kirkland should contact the ADA Coordinator, Chris Thomas (ADACoordinator@kirklandwa.gov), Director of Human Resources (425-587-3210), as soon as possible but no later than 48 hours before the scheduled event.

Fireworks banned in Kirkland City limits

Fire Chief Joe Sanford and Police Chief Cherie Harris want to remind you that the sale and use of fireworks inside the City limits is prohibitedFor over two decades the City of Kirkland has reduced fireworks-related injuries, fires and calls for service through the implementation of Kirkland Municipal Code Chapter 11.60, which disallows the sale and use of fireworks inside the City limits unless it is a permitted display. With this year’s increased risk of wildfires, the City is pleased to continue this tradition of community safety.

We encourage community members to celebrate Independence Day safely! The family-friendly Independence Day celebration begins at 10 a.m. with activities for kids, followed by the children’s walking parade at 11:30 a.m. and the traditional grand parade at noon.  Later that evening, join us for the dazzling public display of fireworks at 10:15 p.m., Thursday, July 4, at Marina Park in downtown Kirkland!
