Arts & Entertainment

Los Lobos

Los Lobos

January 2 | 7 p.m. | Kirkland Performance Center | www.kpcenter.org

More than three decades have passed since Los Lobos released their debut album, “Just Another Band from East L.A.” Since then they’ve repeatedly disproven that title. Los Lobos isn’t “just another” anything, but rather a band that has consistently evolved artistically while never losing sight of their humble roots.

Across the Great Divide: Dustbowl Revival and Hot Club of Cowtown

January 16 | 7 p.m. | Kirkland Performance Center | www.kpcenter.org

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Band, two of today’s defining American roots groups join in an evening of their own songs and a special tribute to “Music from Big Pink” and The Band. Eclectic octet Dustbowl Revival blends folk-Americana and Stax-era soul into a genre-hopping, time-bending dance party. Joining them is Austin-based trio Hot Club of Cowtown, which delivers hot jazz and Western swing light and tight, like tumbleweeds made of velvet.

Studio East

Studio East: International One Acts

For all other shows, two plays will perform. Check the individual date/time for play schedule. "The Falcon" is a funny, romantic adventure story from Russia. "The Masque of Beauty and the Beast" is a stylized and enchanting version of the fairy tale in rhyming couplets. "A Thousand Cranes" is the poignant story of Sadako Sasaki, who hoped to fold one thousand paper cranes to overcome her radiation sickness from Hiroshima.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue

Trombone Shorty’s new album opens with a dirge, but if you think the beloved bandleader, singer, songwriter and horn-blower born Troy Andrews came here to mourn, you got it all wrong. That bit of beautiful New Orleans soul—“Laveau Dirge No. 1,” named after one of the city’s most famous voodoo queens—shows off our host’s roots before “Parking Lot Symphony” branches out wildly, wonderfully and funkily across 12 diverse cuts.
