Father’s Day in Kirkland

This June Celebrate Dad in Kirkland! Kirkland offers a variety of activities for Father’s Day. Launch your boat in Marina Park or rent kayaks, paddleboards and powerboats through many vendors along the lake including Woodmark Waterfront Adventures, Perfect Wave and Northwest Paddle Surfers. Need something a little more relaxing? Enjoy an Argosy or Waterways Lake Cruise.

After your activities stop by Chainline Brewery, Malstrom Brewing or Flycaster Brewing for a tasting brew or show off your putting skills on Flatstick Pub’s nine-hole course. Dad more of a wine drinker? Stop by Mason DeLille, The Grape Choice or the Melody Lynne Vineyard Tasting Room in Downtown Kirkland or Northwest Cellars in Totem Lake. On June 22 Downtown Kirkland hosts the Downtown Kirkland Wine Walk.

Seattle International Film Festival

SIFF’s mission is to create experiences that bring people together to discover extraordinary films from around the world. It is through the art of cinema that we foster a community that is more informed, aware and alive. SIFF will be screening 11 films at the Kirkland Performance Center June 1-3.

June 1

4:30 p.m. Constructing Albert - After the closing of Spain’s legendary elBulli, the restaurant’s unsung creative genius Albert Adrià, the younger brother of head chef Ferran, embarks on a herculean new endeavor-opening six completely unique restaurants in the heart of Barcelona to create a miracle mile of haute cuisine.

6:30 p.m. Love and Shukla - As a devout Brahmin, Mumbai rickshaw driver Shukla has never so much as lusted after a woman. As he is wedded to an extremely shy young bride, the two struggle to discover love, connection and intimacy in the stifling confines of his family’s one-room chawl.

9 p.m. Champions - A disgraced basketball coach is given the chance to coach Los Amigos, a team of players who are intellectually disabled, and soon realizes they just might have what it takes to make it to the national championships in this hilarious and heartfelt box office smash out of Spain.

June 2

1 p.m. Belle and Sabastian: Friends for Life - In the final chapter of the beloved family adventure about a boy and his dog, Sebastian is starting adolescence and Belle is now a devoted mother of three adorable pups, but a new challenge awaits after a stranger appears in their Swiss village and claims that he is Belle’s rightful owner.

3:30 p.m. Return to Mount Kennedy - 50 years after their fathers Jim Whitaker and Robert F. Kennedy summited an untouched Yukon mountain in honor of the late JFK, Bob Whitaker and Christopher Kennedy decided to retrace their steps and climb the unforgiving peak, gracing family history and pushing their resolve to its limits.

6 p.m. Naples in Veils - The entrancing art, music and architecture of the city of Naples form a sumptuous backdrop for this mystery-shrouded thriller of magic and superstition following a coroner who, after a whirlwind romance with a younger man, next sees him on her autopsy table.

8:30 p.m. Love Education - Taiwanese actress and director Sylvia Chang (Murmur of the Hearts) explores a multi-generational story of love and womanhood in a profound and bittersweet journey that begins when a woman makes a plan to relocate her father’s grave, revealing the romances and betrayals of the past and present.

June 3

1 p.m. Making the Grade - Every year, more than 30,000 students prepare for rigorous and daunting piano exams in Ireland. Welcoming audiences into living rooms, music studios and churches, this edifying documentary explores the bond between teachers and pupils as well as the intense musical dedication required to make the grade.

3:15 p.m. Pig - When a serial killer begins decapitating Tehran’s greatest film directors, a narcissistic auteur is jealous that he has yet to be targeted, at least until he becomes the prime suspect, in this farcical dark comedy from Mani Haghighi, director of SIFF 2017 audience favorite A Dragon Arrives.

6 p.m. The Last Suit - A heartfelt and charming journey begins when Abraham, a spry octogenarian tailor and Holocaust survivor played by prolific Argentine actor Miguel Ángel Solá, leaves his Buenos Aires home on a one-way trip across Europe in search of the man who once saved his life.

8:15 p.m. Breathe - Two Australian teens in the 1970s discover the liberating world of surfing and find a mentor in an enigmatic big wave rider (“The Mentalist” star Simon Baker, making his directorial debut) who pushes them to take increasingly dangerous risks, from the novel by Tim Winton. Ages 17+
