King County Historic Preservation team earns national recognition

Crossposted from Keeping King County Green

Homes built in King County neighborhoods during the post-World War II housing boom have long been dwindling in number – cleared to make way for newer homes that better fit current families and lifestyles.

“Our region’s soaring property values and its rapidly growing population have led to losing many of these homes,” said Jennifer Meisner, King County Historic Preservation Officer. “Because they are typically smaller than current standards, but often have desirable views and mature landscaping, these homes are vulnerable to demolition for larger developments.”  Read more.

Save the date: Virtual tour of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s childhood home, Jan. 16

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Metro’s Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EIB) team will be hosting a virtual tour of Dr. King’s childhood home on Jan. 16.

This special event, presented in collaboration with the National Park Service in Atlanta, GA, will be guided by knowledgeable park rangers. The tour offers an intimate look at the home where Dr. King was born and spent his early years, exploring its transformation from a family residence into a historic museum after Dr. King’s assassination in 1968.

This event is open to all King County employees, but space is limited. Please plan to log in early to secure your virtual seat. For questions about the event, email Mark Manuel at mamanuel@kingcounty.gov

Pet of the Week: Orek

I am a five-year-old, male, American Bulldog, color tan, ID #A720362. At 68 lbs I am considered a large breed dog, but I am really a big baby boy. My favorite activities are eating and being loved on. I am not quite aware of my size and can be a bit pushy when it comes to getting things I want, like attention and snacks. I may be more successful in a home with older children who are stable on their feet. I have not met any other dogs while at RASKC so it's unknown how I feel about them. Any current dogs in your home are encouraged to come meet me here in the shelter so staff can help us get off on the right paw. I am a spirited dog with a fun-loving personality. I am still working on my manners, so I would do best with a family who is willing to work with me and help me become the best dog I can be. I am quickly becoming a fan favorite with the staff, they all say my happy-go-lucky attitude and adorable snorts are the best part of their day.

I am neutered, current on vaccinations, and microchipped! Our adoption comes with many benefits, including 30 days of opt-in pet insurance through Trupanion. You can find out more about me and my other friends on our website at kingcounty.gov/adoptapet. If you have more questions, you can contact RASKC via phone at 206-296-7387 (PETS) or email pets@kingcounty.gov
