The Washington Certified Public Manager® program is an intensive certificate program specifically for public sector employees who want to connect their leadership journey to their work in the public sector. In the six-course program, you’ll study a set of key competencies for public employees, including leadership, work management, organizational integrity, process improvement, and personal development. You will learn how to address the challenges and demands of public management through in-person workshops (4 – 5 per year), weekly online class sessions, group discussions, and a self-leadership project. You’ll wrap up the program with a process improvement capstone project directly applicable to your organization’s unique needs – which will also earn you a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
This year’s program begins in mid-August. For more information about the program, dates of upcoming information sessions, and eligibility details, please visit https://www.pce.uw.edu/certificates/washington-certified-public-manager.
UW Continuum College is offering a 10% discount on the program to King County employees if 10 or more register for this year’s cohort. The Learning & Development team will be tracking interest to determine if this minimum can be met. Please contact us kctraining@kingcounty.gov, with the subject line WA Certified Public Manager to let us know you are interested or if you have any questions.

Be True To YOU
Being authentic is an important aspect of leading. It builds trust, acceptance and respect. When leaders create psychological safety, others can bring their true selves, too. Authenticity is not about baring your soul all the time. It’s about identifying what’s important to you and integrate those ideas into your work life so you can feel satisfied and engaged, and make positive contributions.
The NEOGOV eLearning Art of Authenticity covers ideas in the book by Dr. Karissa Thacker. You will learn how “quirks” can be positive, how to encourage others to be more open and transparent, and how to have candid conversations. Authentic leadership is about developing yourself with intention in the trenches of your day-to-day work.
In the book, three “selves” are described. The ‘ideal’ self is who you want to be, you at your best. The ‘real’ self is who you perceive yourself to be. And the ‘ought’ self is who you think you ‘ought’ to be according to other people or cultural norms. We all shift amongst them, sometimes depending on the context. Reflecting on who you are in different situations can be insightful, and can help shape positive choices. So ask yourself which one of your selves is pulling rank - and how can you unleash your ideal self and let go of the ‘ought’ self?
In the Greater Good Science Center, article How to Be More Authentic at Work, Dr. Patricia Hewlin notes that authenticity is relational. Perspective taking is a component of it , not only from ourselves but from others. Because of that, we should call on our emotional intelligence and respect, listening and understanding. For some, being authentic might be risky and take a lot of courage, so find ways to support yourself and others on the way.
