2023 Accomplishments and What's New in 2024!
Happy 2024! This past year your Learning & Development (L&D) team worked hard to continue building out our portfolio of educational opportunities to serve the different needs, interests, and goals of our King County workforce. Over the course of 2023 the L&D team hosted 53 workshops with a whopping grand total of 1,864 attendees.
In addition to spending a large portion of our year facilitating workshops, we were able to launch two new workshops (Leading for Well-being, Building High Trust Cultures), beta our new Leader Learning Labs, and pilot the first workshop of our new Cultivating Equity series, ERSJ Fundamentals: A Journey Through Socialization (which replaces the former ERSJ Fundamentals course).
Thank you again to all of the folks who helped us pilot and beta test our curriculum! As a reminder to all of our HR professionals, all of the L&D workshops are now eligible for SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) Professional Development Credits (PDC). If you’re an employee who needs continuing education credits for a certification, don’t hesitate to reach out to talk to us about getting our workshops certified for your program!
Another huge highlight from 2023 was the development and launch of the We Are Racially Just: Our King County Values at Work required eLearning course, which made a resounding statement about our collective commitment to fostering a racially just workplace. Each department has taken the call seriously, with the majority achieving over a 90% compliance by the end of 2023. Some departments have far more non-computer users, who have been provided an extended deadline until September 30, 2024, to complete the course. This inclusive approach ensures that every King County employee has the opportunity to engage with the valuable content.
The success of this eLearning course goes beyond mere compliance; it has sparked engaging conversations throughout our organization. Word-of-mouth promotion has been robust, extending beyond conventional email announcements. The genuine interest and positive feedback from those who have taken this eLearning course underscores the importance of the We are Racially Just value in King County’s True North and Values.
You may have noticed how participating in one of our leadership or equity, racial, and social justice trainings has played a role in an individual’s or team’s exceptional contributions to King County in 2023! If so, you can recognize them by submitting a nomination for the Executive’s Best-Run Government Innovation or Leadership Excellence Award. Click here for more information.
This year we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline! The team will be working on launching several new workshops and learning opportunities throughout 2024, including the chance for smaller, more in-depth conversations on leadership and ERSJ topics. Check out our current list of offerings in the Course Catalog through your NEOGOV dashboard and sign up for a workshop!
Featured below, you’ll see some of the data behind our successes this past year and hear more about our upcoming workshops. King County employees are consistently striving to learn and grow – and it shows! We appreciate all of you and love being part of your personal and professional development journey.
We are one team! Please reach out to us any time with questions, feedback, or any suggestions. You can contact us at kctraining@kingcounty.gov.

ERSJ Fundamentals: A Journey Through Socialization - Workshop Launch
We’re excited to announce the official launch of the first workshop in the Cultivating Equity Series. All workshops in the Cultivating Equity Series are designed to support King County employees in learning about equity, racial, and social justice at King County.
Participants will explore the complex nature of socialization and its impact on our views, beliefs, and behaviors and gain deep understanding of how systemic biases are embedded in our society. We will explore strategies for building inclusive communities where all individuals, regardless of their background, can thrive. By examining the county's value of "We Respect All People", we provide participants with tools, knowledge, and insights to actively contribute to these ideals. Together, we aim to empower participants to take meaningful actions that drive social change and promote justice in their own spheres of influence. Through interactive activities, reflection, and group discussions, participants will be able to:
• Explain the concepts of identity and socialization • Examine how their own identities have shaped their experiences • Describe how our socialization influences our understanding of ourselves and others
With our launch just last Thursday, the next available session is scheduled on Thursday, February 15, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. View all available sessions and enroll Here.

To reach our True North – a welcoming community where every person can thrive – we must achieve racial justice. “We Are Racially Just” is a core value of King County. Through personal testimonies from King County employees, the We Are Racially Just: Our King County Values at Work eLearning course explores what it means to be racially just and helps to familiarize employees with King County’s Pro-Equity and Anti-Racist actions and identify behaviors that can support these actions at work. This training helps to ensure that each of us understands what it means to be racially just and what we can do in our own work to advance racial justice at King County.
If taking this eLearning is still on your NEOGOV To Do list, employees who have regular computer access at work should have completed the eLearning by the end of 2023. Those without regular computer access have until September 30, 2024.
Thank you again to everyone involved in creating a welcoming community at King County where every person can thrive. Please reach out to our Learning & Development team at kctraining@kingcounty.gov if you have any questions or difficulty with this training.
It isn't too late! This NEOGOV eLearning can be accessed here: We Are Racially Just: Our King County Values at Work.
