Records Management

Reminder: Every King County employee has a responsibility to manage records

As a government agency, King County is subject to laws regarding public records and transparency.

The county, each of its agencies, and all employees have the legal responsibility to demonstrate the proper care and management of county records. Records management is not just work assigned to administrative employees; it’s a part of all jobs, at every level of county government. For a refresher on what those responsibilities are, you are encouraged to take the 15-minute online Basic Records Management course.

The end of year is a great time to ensure any records management tasks relevant to your job, including filing records to Content Manager and deleting transitory records, are up to date. According to Executive Policy, Content Manager is the required repository for King County’s inactive electronic records. Records can be filed from Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive. If you’re not sure where to start, go to Getting Started in Content Manager.

The King County Records Management Program offers a host of services and resources to help you, including:

  • Advice and consultation about records management issues
  • Access to Content Manager
  • Trainings and demonstrations
  • Job aids and much more

New King County survey shows chronic underinvestment in the nonprofit workforce is a driver for turnover

The King County Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) recently released the results of the 2023 King County Nonprofit Wage & Benefits Survey Report and the King County Nonprofit Employee Engagement Survey Report.

The reports show how underinvestment in the nonprofit workforce impacts programs, services, and the overall sector. The surveys found that 71 percent of nonprofit workers are considering leaving their position because of pay. Read more.

Onsite employee flu and COVID-19 vaccine clinics a success

It is always important to stay up to date on your flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. As we enter the winter months and COVID-19 continues to evolve, it is especially important to ensure successful protection against viral infections. King County believes in providing access to recommended vaccinations for employees and hosted onsite flu and COVID-19 vaccine clinics from Sept. 18 through Nov. 13.

King County and Balanced You are happy to see the success of the clinics. If you were not able to make it to one of the onsite clinics then you can still get vaccinated at pharmacies, clinics, and community events. Read more.

Greg and Mary Rabourn

30 years at King County: A love story

In 1993, Department of Natural Resources and Parks employees Greg Rabourn and Mary Rabourn (née Pehl) began working as Special Waste Technicians in the Solid Waste Division. Little did they know it was also the start of a beautiful relationship.

This couple’s “meet-cute” involved 900 acres of squishy garbage at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill. Greg started working one month before Mary was hired and agreed to take the new person out for a tour of the landfill. Read more.

Get to know the Walking Bus program

Walking Bus FMD

King County’s employee “Walking Bus” pilot program now offers five afternoon departures times. In this pilot phase, which started Nov. 6, employees can join their colleagues and a Facilities Management Division (FMD) Security Escort each weekday evening walking from the Third Avenue entrance of the King County Courthouse to the King Street Station and Colman Dock via a stop at the Pioneer Square light rail station entrance at Jefferson Street and Yesler Way.

The meeting location for both routes is the Information Desk in the First Floor lobby of the courthouse. Get more information on routes and departure times. View this video for more details.

Save the date for a conversation with Jeffery Robinson about his Netflix documentary, "Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism In America"  

Jeffery Robinson, filmmaker and founder of the Who We Are Project, will join us virtually for a deep dive conversation featuring three key segments from his critically acclaimed documentary "Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America."

The viewing will be followed by a moderated Q&A discussion. This engagement, sponsored by the Office of Equity, Racial and Social Justice (OERSJ) and the Department of Executive Services (DES), is open to all King County employees as part of the annual celebration of our county's namesake, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Training Spotlight:

Building Gender Inclusive Spaces: Supporting Trans and Non-Binary People in the Workplace – Online – In this three-hour workshop, participants will learn about the long history of gender diverse peoples across the globe, foundational knowledge of gender and sexuality, and best practices to support a gender diverse workforce. (2.75 SHRM PDC)

Building High Trust Cultures – Online – When work cultures and relationships are rooted in trust and psychological safety there is less stress, burnout, and turnover, as well as higher team performance, innovation, and engagement. Trust is a crucial component to successful interpersonal and team dynamics, all of which are impacted by social identities. Using age/generation as an illustrative example, this course shows that healthy workplaces rely on a foundation of trust. As a leadership cornerstone, building trust fosters a culture of inclusion and belonging where every employee can bring their authentic self so their strengths shine. (3.75 SHRM PDC)

ERSJ Fundamentals Webinar – Equity, Racial, and Social Justice Fundamentals is the first in a series of trainings designed to support King County employees in learning about equity and social justice and in particular racial justice at King County. Using videos, small group conversations and sharing of information and resources, participants will be able to: explain the concepts of equity and inequity; examine King County disparities related to race and racism; summarize King County’s commitment to equity, racial, and social justice; and identify ways you can advance equity in your everyday interactions.
