Honoring Keith
In honor of our team member and friend, Keith Clarke, we dedicate this space to him to honor who he was and what he meant to all of us. Keith was always larger than life. He loved his family and friends and always liked to focus on the silver lining. Beneath his considerable sense of humor, he was a deeply compassionate person. When it came to connecting with and educating people, he was incredibly dedicated. He had such a vigor for life and was so much fun that everyone who was ever in a meeting, training, or any space with Keith remembers sharing that time with him.
We understand the impact his passing has had on our team and on so many in our King County community. Keith never met a stranger. If you have thoughts or feelings about his passing that you’d like to process, please consider reaching out to our Employee Assistance Program (AEP) and Making Life Easier (MLE) for guidance.

Equity and Leadership Webinar
Created in partnership with the Office of Equity and Social Justice, Equity and Leadership is designed to support participants’ ability to recognize the role that race and racism have on disparities in our workforce and to understand the responsibility for people leaders to create racially equitable work environments for their teams. Sessions are free and December offers a session with availability on Tuesday, December 6th, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Register Here.
As we look forward to the new year, we would like to take a moment to reflect on 2022. The Equity and Social Justice Education Team is proud to have been given the opportunity to support over 1,900 employees in our 52 workshops this year! Thank you all for the work you have put into leading with equity and social justice.
As we are looking towards 2023, we’re hoping to add some new sessions for virtual facilitator-led workshops soon! In the meantime, here are some things you can do to continue to grow your knowledge and skill around equity and social justice conversations:
Check out the “Equity & Social Justice” category in NEOGOV for a wide range of virtual learning opportunities. These workshops typically range from 5-20 minutes and are a great way to start learning the fundamentals of equity and social justice.

Become One of the 1,400 Leaders Who Have Strengthened Their Network
The Leading the Way training portfolio supports developing fundamental skills and ways of thinking that foster great leadership that is grounded in equity. We are grateful to all the leaders who have participated, showed up for each other, shared their wisdom, took risks, and flexed their vulnerability muscles. See how Vulnerability as a Leader Strength, an 8-minute eLearning course in NEOGOV, helps leaders become more relatable and effective.
Leading the Way from the Career & Culture Division’s Leadership Development team has supported more than 1,400 King County employees in fulfilling the County’s Investing in YOU strategic plan for becoming a best-run government. Look at what one leader had to say about their experience, “I was honestly impressed by the content covered in this class and found it incredibly valuable. It helped me reflect on how I can be more aware of and accountable for the mindset I bring to work each day. The clear explanation of the four universal needs people have of leaders was also very useful and helped reframe the way I think about the kinds of support people need at work. I liked the emphasis placed on importance of supervisors listening to and genuinely engaging employees to better support them as individuals. This class provided actionable steps for building the kind of emotional intelligence and awareness that we want to see in our leaders and that we all need to cultivate within ourselves”.
There are two more opportunities to participate in workshops this year! Register HERE for Equity and Leadership taking place on December 6th from 12:00-4:00pm and HERE for Leader Mindset taking place on December 8th from 8:00am-12:00pm. And be on the lookout for new courses in 2023 that will help you in developing your team by visiting the Leading the Way website. We hope to see you soon!

The King County Mentoring Program is especially designed to provide employees with the opportunity to develop beneficial and rewarding partnerships that encourages professional and personal development in powerful ways. Mentoring allows a mentee to build a relationship with a trusted advisor who can help them explore career options and develop future goals in a safe space. Being a mentor can improve their coaching skills, build influence and contribute to the success of the County.
As we continue to nourish a learning culture here at King County, providing employees with the tools and resources to take their career to the next level, mentoring is set to play an important role in our Investing in YOU strategy.
The 2023 schedule is coming soon! Click the poster to learn more about the program.

The bulk of our communications now happen online. And email has created bulk—much more information comes at us quickly. This can cause us to write in a hurry and informally. Email lends itself to a different writing style and different “rules” of the correct and polite way to communicate. In a professional setting—email or otherwise—writing effective and polished communications reflects your credibility. This workshop will cover: the anatomy of an effective e-mail, using subject lines to your advantage, how to reduce e-mail volume, and general power-writing tips.
Offered through North Seattle College with instructor, Leslie Hall.
NOTE: This is a TWO session class that takes place on Tuesday's, 6:30pm to 8:30pm, November 29 and December 6. Register Here.
- Tue, Nov 29, 2022, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
- Tue, Dec 6, 2022, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
