DAJD managers give their thoughts on anti-racism workshops

Managers and supervisors at the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD) attended pro-equity workshops in December. Anita Whitfield, King County’s Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer, led the virtual sessions. There’s more to come: DAJD is making equity and social justice literacy a core competency for all department leaders. Read their feedback. 


We.APP

Best Starts for Kids partner spotlight: We.APP

We.APP (We Act. Present. Perform) believes that every child has a story, but not all children are empowered or can openly share their experiences with others. With Best Starts for Kids' support, We.APP trains teaching guides to work alongside classroom educators in a co-teaching model, offering the only public speaking class for students across seven Seattle Public Schools. For an entire school year, more than 350 scholars in 4th-12th grades discover their unique voice and create original public speaking pieces and messages that express their views on education, home and life. Free class for employees: Introduction to Mindfulness

Introduction to Mindfulness | Thursday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. | Register here

Balanced You is continuing to sponsor Mindfulness classes throughout the winter months. Mindfulness is a practice that uses breath work, visualization, and other techniques to support you in reducing stress at work and at home. During this hour-long introductory workshop, participants will review how mindfulness can help reduce stress, what reactivity and burnout are, and the science that supports mindfulness. Participants will also learn several simple, but effective mindfulness practices they can integrate into their lives right away. Sign up for this Thursday’s class here.


Wellness Advisory Committee

Balanced You Well-being Advisory Committees: Application period closes January 30

Do you have ideas on how King County can better support the well-being of you and your colleagues? In response to employee surveys and listening sessions, Balanced You, is developing two new well-being advisory committees: one for telecommuters and one for essential employees working onsite. Creating Effective Job Application Materials Workshop

This two-hour virtual workshop will provide you tips and strategies on how to make your application materials stand out. Learning objectives include:

  • Understanding the purpose of the job application, resume, cover letter and supplemental questions and how to make each of them more effective 
  • Deciding what to include in your resume and the best format to showcase your qualifications 
  • How to write a cover letter tailored to the specific position 
  • Identifying and showcasing your accomplishments  

This workshop will take place Thursday, Feb. 4, and Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 1–3 p.m. Register Here

Learning & Development Training Opportunities

  • Strategic Planning – Online – N Seattle College – Improve the way you view strategic planning and scenario planning with techniques that provoke new ideas while building support for those decisions. You’ll get a variety of tools to help you evaluate problems and make decisions, assess your organization from several angles, and address a variety of “what-if” situations.   • Equity and Social Justice Fundamentals – Online – Equity and Social Justice Fundamentals is the first session in a series of trainings designed to support King County employees in learning about equity and social justice and in particular racial justice at King County. Using videos, small group conversations, and sharing of information and resources. This training is free and will be offered on multiple dates with the first session taking place on Thursday, Jan. 28, from 1-4:30 p.m. Register Here
  • Developing Your Leadership Style – Online – S Seattle College – Learn how to capitalize on your personal leadership style to achieve workplace goals. In this course you will: Identify your leadership style through personal assessment; learn the difference between leadership and management; recognize the "being" and "doing" of leadership; and develop the innate motivating techniques that transform employee attitudes and enhance cooperation and teamwork. This class takes place on Friday, Jan. 29 from 9-11 a.m., with a fee of $89.00. Register Here
