Our garbage needs somewhere to go but our only regional landfill will soon be full and need to close. The County is looking at new options for where to dispose of garbage next.
There are three possible options for future garbage disposal:
- Send garbage by train to another other landfill in southern Washington or northern Oregon. This is the method that the City of Seattle, Snohomish County, and Thurston County currently use.
- Dispose of garbage in a waste-to-energy facility using mass burn technology (WTE-MB) and send the ash by train to another landfill. This option would require the siting and construction of a WTE-MB facility in King County. However, it does offer the lowest projected carbon impact for the environment.
- A mix of both options with about half of the garbage sent to the local WTE-MB facility and half of the garbage, as well as the ash created from the WTE-MB, sent by train to other landfills.
Each option has benefits and challenges and the County wants to hear from you about how they may impact you, your family, or business.
