Tunneling in action!

The contractor is continuing around-the-clock tunneling work at the Red Cedar Trailhead in Bellevue.

Check out the video of the tunneling machine working deep underground!

Tunneling machine in operation

What to expect during tunneling work:

  • Work activity at the Red Cedar Trailhead will continue around the clock during tunneling. The tunneling machine will operate 24/7 to ensure smooth and safe operation.
  • Typical construction noise during work hours.
  • Temporary lane closures and construction vehicle traffic on Coal Creek Parkway SE.
  • The Red Cedar Trailhead is closed. Trail users can access the natural area via the Forest Drive, Red Town, Cinder mine, and other trailheads. Please follow trail detours and stay out of fenced construction areas.

Tunneling helps reduce impacts on nearby communities and natural areas compared to traditional construction methods. Visit our online open house to learn more tunneling and the Coal Creek project.

Traffic impacts on Coal Creek Parkway SE

There are on and off single-lane closures around project work areas. The closures happen only when needed based on construction activities.

The closures help keep everyone safe by giving construction vehicles space to enter and exit the work zone without merging directly into regular traffic. Please travel carefully, as drivers and cyclists will share a lane while passing through the area.

See the details for southbound and northbound lane closures below.

Southbound lane closures

When needed, southbound single-lane closures are on weekdays from 6 am to 3 pm.

Southbound lane closures on Coal Creek Parkway around work areas are weekdays 6 am to 3 pm.

Note: Lane closures shown on the map are approximate.

Northbound lane closures

When needed, northbound singe-lane closures are on weekdays from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm.

During 24/7 tunneling, the northbound lane closure near the Red Cedar Trailhead entrance will be in effect from 10:30 am to 5 am, 7 days a week. The lane opens up between 5 and 10:30 am to help morning commute.

Northbound lane closures on Coal Creek Parkway around work areas are weekdays 10:30 am to 7:30 pm.

Note: Lane closures shown on the map are approximate.

About this project

Construction for King County Wastewater Treatment Division's (WTD) Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project began in 2025. It will add wastewater capacity and move the active pipeline away from Coal Creek's environmentally sensitive areas. This project was the first wastewater infrastructure project to earn a Salmon-Safe certification!
