Some residents and businesses requested to reduce water use for a day
As early as Tuesday, October 6, crews will repair the sewer pipe and maintenance holes on 24th Street Northeast to 23rd Street Northeast crossing Auburn Way North. We expect to finish these activities on Wednesday, October 21. The schedule may be subject to change.
We will reline the pipe with a material that can cure in place inside the pipe. Relining the pipe saves money and limits disruptions. This work requires crews to work continuously around the clock. A temporary diversion pipe will keep sewer service running while we do these repairs.
Residents and businesses in the following areas are asked to reduce their water use for 24 hours:
-
5 am Monday, October 12, to 5 am Tuesday, October 13: 23rd Street Northeast between Auburn Way North and East Street Northeast
-
5 am Wednesday, October 14, to 5 am Thursday, October 15: 23rd Street Northeast between East Street Northeast and the Auburn Municipal Airport
Limiting water use in these areas will help the sewer lining to harden. You can use toilets, sinks, and showers normally. However, please avoid:
- Doing laundry
- Running your dishwasher
- Other high-water-use tasks
See the map below for more details.
- Crews will work around the clock 5 am Monday, October 6, through 7 pm Wednesday, October 21.
- You will be able to use your sinks, toilets, and showers normally.
- Crews will maintain driveway access.
- Expect noise from trucks, generators, compressors, forklifts, vacuum trucks and other construction equipment. To minimize nighttime noise, we will only run equipment when necessary.
- Lights will be used to safely illuminate the work area at night.
- Expect traffic detours, equipment, and lane and sidewalk closures.
- Flaggers will guide vehicles and help traffic move in both directions near the work zone. Street parking restrictions along the temporary sewer diversion pipe and repair work areas.
Stay safe! Please watch for equipment in the area. Travel slowly. Follow signs and directions from flaggers in the work zone.
The King County Wastewater Treatment Division is repairing about 2.6 miles of old concrete sewer pipe, with pipe sizes ranging from 18 to 36 inches wide, in Auburn. We are also repairing 45 maintenance holes and over 100 side sewer connections to homes and businesses. Repairing the M Street Trunk will keep the sewer pipe working for another 50 years and protect water quality and public health.
During the first phase of the project, we repaired 0.7 miles of pipe in 2025. In June 2026, crews began the second phase of the M Street Trunk Rehabilitation Project. Crews are repairing about 1.9 miles of sewer pipe serving the city of Auburn during this phase. Work is taking place between the intersection of 2nd Street Northeast and Pike Street Northeast and 23rd Street Northeast, near the Auburn Municipal Airport (Zones 30 and 36).
We will keep community members informed of project progress and be available to answer questions and address concerns throughout construction. Contact us at 206-263-9878 or email MStTrunkrepair@kingcounty.gov
We will provide additional translations or an interpreter at no cost.
