Last week, I joined my colleagues in proclaiming September 15-October 15 Latino Heritage Month in King County. Our Latino community is a vital part of our diverse and vibrant region and we invite everyone to celebrate their contributions to our region’s cultural, economic, and political life.
Next Thursday, October 1 from 6:00-8:00 PM, you can join Centro Cultural Mexicano (16300 Redmond Way, Sute 100, Redmond) and artist Amaranta Sandys for a painting workshop to create a self-portrait inspired by Frida Kahlo. This opportunity will let you tell your story through art and your artwork will be exhibited at Seattle Opera!
September is National Preparedness Month, inviting everyone to prepare for emergencies. The Pacific Northwest has unique disaster risk, from earthquakes to tsunamis, based on our proximity to the Pacific Ocean and our location on a subduction zone, so everyone should do what they can to prepare for disasters, both natural and manmade, in advance.
To make sure you and your family are ready, you can:
- Create a plan, including communication, shelter options, and evacuation routes
- Build a kit that will sustain your family for two weeks, including water, food, flashlights, first aid kits, and pet supplies
- Talk with your family about preparedness
- Sign up for emergency alerts and warnings
Your city’s Office of Emergency Management can provide assistance and educational support. The City of Mercer Island is hosting two emergency preparedness workshops on Wednesday, September 30 at 1:30 or 5:30 PM at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, Room 104 (8236 SE 24th St, Mercer Island). Residents can learn about local hazards and their impacts, items to include in a disaster kit, how to create a family emergency plan, and more.
Indian American Community Services’ Youth Outreach program provides a safe and trusted space for 6th and 7th grade students to navigate the middle school years. Participants have the opportunity to gain volunteer hours through workshops and community service projects, helping to learn leadership skills and empowering youth to be positive influences within their communities. Registration begins tomorrow, Saturday, September 26 at 9:00 AM. Due to limited spaces, it is first-come, first-serve!
