Local government can only be effective if we can earn and keep the trust of the public. That requires a strong and clear code of ethics and we’ve needed ethics reform at King County for a long time. Recent audit findings, misconduct by elected officials, and discussions with the King County Ombuds and the King County Ethics Board have pointed towards an urgent need to overhaul the full King County Code of Ethics.
I have launched a process to rewrite the King County Ethics Code to ensure it is strong, implementable, and creates more accountability. In the coming weeks, I will be developing a proposal to revise the King County Ethics Code so employees and supervisors better understand their responsibilities and are supported to do so with more regular trainings. It’s also clear we need to establish a system of accountability that holds those who do violate the public’s trust responsible for their actions.
I am looking forward to this work to ensure all King County employees and elected officials live up to the trust our residents have placed in us.
