Crews are now completing the final phase of work for the I‑90 Crossing sewer pipe upgrade at the south access point near Mercer Island City Hall and along the section of the I-90 trail between Southeast 35th Street and Southeast 35th Place. This work includes sidewalk and curb restoration, removal of the temporary pedestrian detour, roadway paving, trail paving, and final landscaping. Paving is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled.
Work and impacts on SE 36th St
Beginning as early as September 21, crews will complete sidewalk installation and remove the temporary pedestrian detour on SE 36th St. Grinding and paving in front of Mercer Island City Hall will occur once the new sidewalk is open for pedestrian use. Grinding and paving are expected to be completed in one day, and traffic control in this area will be lifted as early as September 25 once paving and final cleanup are complete.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout this work.
I-90 trail restoration between SE 35th St and SE 35th Pl
As early as September 30, crews will begin grinding and paving the I-90 trail between SE 35th St and SE 35th Pl, and on 96th Avenue Southeast adjacent to the trail. Grinding and paving are expected to be completed in two days.
This section of the trail will reopen to the public by late November once all final restoration activities, including landscaping and plantings, are complete. We will provide an updated notice once the trail reopening has been scheduled.
During grinding, residents may notice typical construction activity, including noise and vibrations. Local access for residents will be maintained through the intersection of SE 35th St and 96th Ave SE. Please drive slowly as you move through the area.
During paving, crews may need to temporarily close the road and redirect traffic around the area. Once paving begins, crews cannot stop or allow cars to drive on the newly paved roadway. Crews will notify residents whose driveways will be temporarily impacted.
