First responders attending the Tunnel-Towers Foundation Steel Across America tour
In our house, we relive the events of 9/11 every year on this date. Like so many with connections to New York, Washington DC, and the people on the hijacked flights, we remember how we first heard of the unfolding attacks, panicked for our loved ones, and slowly learned throughout the day who died and who survived. All of our lives were changed forever.
This twenty-fifth anniversary feels even heavier somehow. Knowing there are fully-grown adults who were not born when we watched the towers fall brings home the obligation we all carry to make sure we do not forget the victims nor the sacrifices of all the first responders who rushed to the scene to save as many lives as possible.
Today, I want to remember and honor the heroism of those first responders. The Fire Department of the City of New York alone lost 343 firefighters on 9/11, hundreds more have died since from exposures due to their work that day and in the aftermath, and still more suffer from chronic illnesses. My brother Chris’ firehouse lost everyone on duty on 9/11/2001.
First responders—our police, firefighters, port authority officers—go to work everyday not knowing what awaits them but dedicated to facing danger in ways that most of us will never experience. I take this anniversary each year to express gratitude for those who run into danger while most of us run away. Please join me in appreciating their spirit of self-sacrifice and service and in fighting for fair treatment and care for all of those who served on 9/11.
