King County Metro announces major service expansion across King County
Starting August 29, riders across King County will see one of King County Metro’s largest service expansions in recent years, including nine new bus routes and more than 3,000 additional bus trips each week. In response to feedback from riders, Metro is boosting frequency and expanding service earlier in the morning, later in the evening and on weekends, making transit more convenient, reliable and better connected to the region’s expanding Link light rail network.
Metro service improvements by the numbers
- Nine new routes: 72, 77, 121, 164, 166, 215, 220, 270, 902
- More frequent service on 13 routes: 8, 75, 111, 156, 168, 181, 182, 183, 187, 218, 269, 903, RapidRide A Line
- Expanded service hours on 10 routes: 111, 156, 181, 182, 183, 187, 218, 269, 631, 903.
- New weekend service on four routes: 111, 183, 269, 631
- More daily trips: 441 more trips each weekday, 400 more trips each Saturday, 507 more trips on Sundays.
- Total daily trips: 12,406 weekday trips; 9,117 Saturday trips; 8,813 Sunday trips.
Metro Flex expanding in South King County
Metro also will pilot Metro Flex service in Auburn and Federal Way, providing on-demand rides that connect people with neighborhoods, transit hubs and other local destinations. Riders can download the app in the Apple App Store, Google Play Store or call 206-258-7739 to book a ride when service launches on Monday, August 31.

RapidRide is coming to south Seattle in 2032!
 It will be the first RapidRide line to operate in south Seattle, bringing frequent service to one of the busiest bus corridors in King County while connecting transit to the Link light rail 1 line in the Rainier Valley. The RapidRide R Line will upgrade the current Route 7 serving neighborhoods from Downtown Seattle, Chinatown-International District (including Little Saigon), Mount Baker, Columbia City, Hillman City, Brighton, Dunlap, Rainier Valley and Rainier Beach.
Project overview
Route 7 is one of the Metro’s busiest routes, serving over 11,000 people every day. Scheduled to begin service in 2032, the RapidRide R Line aims to improve transit travel time, reliability and rider experience through the following upgrades to the route:
- Upgraded transit stations and shelters
- Enhanced lighting and passenger amenities
- Bus-only lanes
- Signal upgrades to reduce delays
- Safer pedestrian access to transit

Supervisor Spotlight: Highlighting those behind the scenes who keep us moving
 It takes a lot of people to keep a transit system running smoothly across 150 routes and over 300,000 boardings a day.
Bus drivers are the most visible part of any transit system, but there are people behind the scenes who are just as vital in the day-to-day operation of King County Metro.
Their responsibilities include training operators, planning the routes that run throughout the region, and literally being the “traffic controllers” who keep track of the buses on their daily runs.
We’d like to introduce you to the staff that help keep the wheels on the bus going “round and round” every day.
