Last week, I was proud to announce that the King County Council unanimously passed my legislation strengthening our ethics rules to help prevent county employees from abusing their positions and safeguard taxpayer dollars from fraud and waste.

One of my jobs is to help my constituents keep an eye out for ways they can save money or County programs that may be of help. Through state law, King County has a powerful tool to help seniors and persons with disabilities remain in their homes. If you are 61 years old, disabled, or a veteran with 80% disability, own your home, and make less than $84,000 a year, you can apply for an exemption that can potentially save you thousands of dollars on your property taxes.

State law provides two tax benefit programs for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. They include property tax exemptions and property tax deferrals. With exemptions, you pay fewer taxes or none at all. With deferrals, you are able to pay your taxes at a later date.
Deferrals:
You may qualify for a deferral of your property tax liability if:
- You are 60 or older, or retired because of physical disability.
- You own the home in which you live and occupy it at least nine months a year.
- Your household income for 2025 was $88,998 or less.
- You meet equity requirements.
Exemptions:
- Income limit (based on 2024 earnings)
- Your annual income must be under $84,000, including Social Security and other sources
- Age and/or disability (at least one)
- At least age 62 the first year you apply
- Disabled or a veteran with a service-connected evaluation of at least 80% total disability rating
- Ownership and occupancy
- You own the residence as of December 31 of the prior year of the property tax year
- You occupy the residence for at least 6 months each year (for tax years 2022 and 2021)
- You occupy the residence for at least 9 months each year (for tax year 2020)
While the King County Assessor’s Office does accept paper applications, they strongly encourage you to apply online here: Senior Exemption Portal. If you need help, you can call the Assessor’s Office at 206-296-3920 and a member of their staff can walk you through the process. Everyone should be able to get the tax relief they are entitled to as quickly as possible!

If you qualify as a low-income household and live on your own property in unincorporated King County, you may be eligible for a 50 percent discount on the annual surface water management fee on your land parcel(s). The open period to apply is every year from August 1 through September 15.
