Expect staging, prep work, and intermittent trail closure as soon as mid-August.
King County will repair a culvert that runs under the Eastside Interceptor Section 14 (ESI 14) sewer pipe. Crews will also build a retaining wall to support the slope at the culvert site and stabilize the stream nearby. This work will help protect the pipe from potential damage in the future. The repair project will require closing the Cross Kirkland Corridor (CKC) between Northeast 52nd Street and 108th Avenue Northeast.
Initial work on the Trail to prepare the work site will start in August.
Preparation work will include:
- Occasional trail closures.
- Connecting an above-ground diversion pipe to maintain service.
- Using heavy construction equipment on CKC trail.
- Establishing a trail detour
ESI 14 sewer pipe is a 7-foot diameter pipe owned by King County. The pipe carries about 2.6 million gallons of wastewater a day during dry weather to the County’s South Treatment Plant in Renton. In July 2025, King County and City of Kirkland crews found a leak from the County’s ESI 14 sewer pipe that was entering the culvert. King County coordinated with Public Health – Seattle & King County, and no public health risk was identified.
Crews completed repairs to the ESI 14 sewer pipe in February. Work to build a new retaining wall and repair the culvert will finish by this fall. Crews will remove the diversion pipe and restore the site after the repairs are complete.
The Eastside Interceptor is one of the largest conveyance pipes in our regional sewer system. It collects and carries untreated wastewater from local municipal sewer systems between Kirkland and Renton and sends it to South Treatment Plant, where it is cleaned and released into Puget Sound.
