This week, I was thrilled to attend the grand opening of Sheila Stanton Place, the Kirkland Health through Housing location that will provide 101 units of permanent supportive housing for our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
Since my time as Mayor of Bellevue and now as a King County Councilmember, it has always been my priority to ensure the Eastside is doing our part to address our region’s homelessness crisis and this is another key piece of the puzzle. I was proud to co-sponsor the legislation establishing Health through Housing and to work closely with local leadership and the community to bring this project to fruition in Kirkland.
Permanent supportive housing is a proven solution to homelessness. It's not a band-aid. It's a life-changing cure. Plymouth Housing, who will operate the site, is one of the most experienced and respected housing providers in our region. With their expertise and partnership of the City of Kirkland, we are setting this project up for success. With on-site services like mental health care, substance use disorder treatment, and case management, residents will have a path to stability and healing. And with clear accountability measures and a strong structure for engagement if issues arise, this will benefit our entire community, the residents of this building, and the neighbors alike.

On Thursday, I joined King County Elections Director Julie Wise and Bellevue College President David May to unveil the new ballot drop box on the Bellevue College campus. Our democracy thrives when more people have the opportunity to engage and I’m so excited that this drop box is not just easily accessible by transit but in the heart of a college campus, where so many young people are learning how to become civically engaged.
These boxes have been a huge part of our success in running a secure, accessible mail-in voting system. Given attempts on the federal level to limit mail-in voting, King County Elections’ ballot boxes remain an important backstop to ensuring your voice is heard. Thank you to King County Elections for their continued commitment to making our safe, secure elections are accessible to every voter seeking to engage.
