Please expect construction impacts between 7 pm and 5 am
As soon as Monday, July 13, crews working for the King County Wastewater Treatment Division will work overnight to install a temporary sewer diversion pipe under Auburn Way N between 24th Street NE and 23rd Street NE. This work will require crews to dig a trench in the road and bury the temporary pipe. The temporary diversion pipe will keep sewer service running while we repair the M Street Trunk sewer pipe.
Work will occur at night, between 7 pm and 5 am, to reduce impacts on traffic during the day. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on Auburn Way North while we install the temporary sewer diversion pipe. We expect to finish these activities on the night of July 17. Please note the schedule may change due to various circumstances.
- Night work will occur within permitted hours between 7 pm and 5 am
- Expect noise from trucks, excavators, and other construction equipment
- Lights will be used to safely illuminate the work area
- You will be able to use your sinks, toilets, and showers normally
- Crews will maintain driveway access
- Expect traffic detours, equipment, and lane and sidewalk closures
- Street parking restrictions along the temporary sewer diversion pipe and repair work areas
Please watch for equipment and signs in the area, travel slowly, and follow directions from flaggers in the work zone.
The King County Wastewater Treatment Division is repairing about 2.6 miles of old concrete sewer pipe, with pipe sizes ranging from 18 to 36 inches wide, in Auburn. We are also repairing 45 maintenance holes and over 100 side sewer connections to homes and businesses. Rehabilitating the M Street Trunk will help preserve aging infrastructure and ensure the reliability of our regional wastewater system.
During the first phase of the project, we repaired 0.7 miles of pipe in 2025. In June 2026, crews began the second phase of the M Street Trunk Rehabilitation Project. Crews are repairing about 1.9 miles of sewer pipe serving the city of Auburn during this phase. Work is taking place between the intersection of 2nd Street Northeast and Pike Street Northeast and 23rd Street Northeast, near the Auburn Municipal Airport (Zones 30 and 36).
We will keep community members informed of project progress and be available to answer questions and address concerns throughout construction. Contact us at 206-263-9878 or email MStTrunkrepair@kingcounty.gov
We will provide additional translations or an interpreter at no cost.
