Work and Impacts at SE 35th St and 96th Ave SE
As of late June, crews completed substantial work at the north access point for the 96th Avenue Siphon, the sewer pipe that runs under I-90. This work included accessing the pipe near the intersection of 96th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 35th Street and connecting it to the new sewer line under I-90. Crews have also backfilled the pit at this location.
Crews are now beginning demobilization at the north access point. During this work, the intersection of SE 35th St and 96th Ave SE will operate with single-lane alternating traffic directed by flaggers to allow large vehicles to haul equipment off site. Near neighbors can expect some noise while the vacuum truck is in use. Drivers may experience short delays when driving through the intersection. Driveway access for residents will be maintained at all times. Please travel slowly through the area and follow all posted signs and crew directions. Demobilization is expected to continue through mid-July.
In addition to demobilizing equipment, crews will complete several final tasks, including pipe testing, grouting, and trail restoration near the access point.
Once demobilization is complete, crews will temporarily restore the roadway surface and then restore all disturbed areas based on permit conditions agreed upon with the City of Mercer Island.
Work and impacts on SE 36th St
Work at the south access point on SE 36th Street, in front of Mercer Island City Hall, is still ongoing and will continue through July. Once the construction work is complete, crews will continue with site cleanup, equipment removal, and restoration of areas used during construction. Travelers should expect construction activity, noise, and traffic control in this area. Driveway access for residents will be maintained at all times.
I-90 trail restoration between SE 35th St and SE 35th Pl
Crews have started restoration work on the last closed section of the I‑90 trail between SE 35th St and SE 35th Pl. This week and into next week, crews will raise a few maintenance holes and rough grade the trail to its base level. Crews will access the trail from SE 35th Pl and 96th Ave SE. Once the remaining pipe work on SE 36th St is complete and the trail is fully paved and restored, this final section of the I‑90 trail will reopen.
