Dear Friends and Neighbors,

World Cup fever is upon us. I've had a great time following Team USA, and I can't wait to see them (yes, I do believe!) back in Seattle for the Round of 16. With soccer excitement sweeping our region, there are few better places to gather and cheer on Team USA than Renton's Legacy Square.

I recently had the privilege of joining local leaders for the grand opening of Renton’s hat trick: Legacy Square, Piazza Park, and the Renton Market—a well-delivered and transformative investment in the heart of Renton. I was proud to support this vision and grateful that King County played a significant role in helping bring it across the finish line. Together, this hat trick creates a vibrant gathering place for residents, supports local businesses, and showcases everything that makes our community a great place to live, work, visit, and cheer on Team USA.

As we look ahead to future events once the World Cup concludes, I can’t wait to see how these spaces combined will help bring our community together and support local businesses.

King County just increased sewer rates. I voted 'No'.

Officials visit a wastewater treatment facility.

Earlier this week, the King County Council approved a 12.75% increase to sewer rates for 2027. I was one of only two members of the Council to vote against the increase.

It's important to note that maintaining and upgrading our wastewater system requires significant investment. However, I voted 'No' because I believe we need to put greater pressure on the bureaucracy to do everything possible to identify cost savings before asking ratepayers to shoulder a double-digit increase in rates. With affordability a primary concern for many residents in District 9, this is simply not the appropriate time for a massive double digit increase in the sewer rate.

I remain committed to working with my colleagues and our regional partners to find ways to control costs while continuing to provide the reliable wastewater infrastructure that protects public health and our environment. Families deserve both dependable public services and an affordable utility bill.

Wildfire Season: Important Updates from King County and Puget Sound Energy

As we head into the warmest months of the year, I wanted to share a few important updates from King County's Department of Local Services and Puget Sound Energy to help residents prepare for wildfire season. According to the Department of Local Services, a Stage 1 Burn Ban is now in effect for unincorporated King County, prohibiting yard debris and land-clearing fires. Recreational fires are still allowed under current restrictions, and consumer fireworks remain prohibited in unincorporated King County.

A message from the Department of Local Services:

The National Weather Service is predicting above-average temperatures this summer. That will create drier conditions and increase the risk of fire.

Given that forecast, Fire Marshal Eric Urban has issued a Stage 1 Burn Ban for unincorporated King County that will take effect Monday, June 22.

And with the July 4^th holiday in a couple of weeks, Urban also is reminding the community that the use and sale of fireworks in unincorporated King County is prohibited.

A message from Puget Sound Energy regarding Wildfires

PSE monitors real-time conditions and will operate our electric system more conservatively during wildfire season. When there's dangerous fire weather conditions, we may turn on Enhanced Powerline Settings (EPS) or use a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) to help keep our customers and communities safe. These measures may result in outages. For more information or to report a power outage, visit PSE's Outage map. 

Take steps now to prepare for wildfire season 

• Create and practice a household emergency plan and build an emergency kit. 

• Make sure your PSE account contact information is up to date. 

• If you use a medical device in your home that relies on electricity, apply for Life Support status on your account. 

• Watch this video to learn more about what to expect during a Public Safety Power Shutoff. 

• Maintain trees and other vegetation on your property and report danger trees near power lines to a PSE Arborist. 

• Get your free Wildfire Ready Plan from Washington Department of Natural Resources and take action to make your home and community more resilient. 

• Find resources for emergency preparedness from the American Red Cross.
