Yesterday, I convened a meeting of the King County Transportation District Board of Supervisors to discuss a sales tax proposal that would generate $100 million annually for funding roughly 1,500 miles of roads and 188 bridges in unincorporated King County, connecting cities and communities and providing access to trails and natural areas. After a lively debate, we decided to postpone a vote until the proposal could be further refined.
One of the key points that still needs to be decided upon is whether a portion of the new revenue would go directly to the 39 cities and towns in King County. My colleagues and I will take the time to propose a new option that would meet the interests of both unincorporated and incorporated areas.
Yesterday’s rigorous dialogue shows how important it is to have these difficult decisions to strengthen our decision-making on critical transportation priorities, while recognizing that without additional investments in the next biennium, the Roads Division will not be able to meet the needs of this extensive system. I look forward to further meaningful conversations with my colleagues and our wide range of partners to craft a measured plan that balances varied interests and meets our region’s diverse transportation needs.
