Pipe work underway on SE 24th Street: crews start at intersection of 78th Ave SE, then move east to 81st Ave SE

Expect noise, vibrations, and alternating traffic during work hours

King County’s contractor is realigning a section of pipe at the intersection of 78th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 24th Street. After that work is complete, crews will move east and begin work on another pipe at the intersection of SE 24th St and 81st Avenue Southeast. Both locations are expected to take about two weeks to complete. This schedule is weather-dependent and may take longer.

Crews will use a construction method called open-cut trenching. During open-cut construction, crews sawcut the roadway’s surface, remove asphalt, and dig down to the pipe. You may notice construction noise and vibrations during work hours.

Traffic impacts: During work hours, flaggers and signage will direct single lane alternating traffic through the work area. Drivers may experience brief delays and can expect to wait up to 15 minutes when traveling on 78th Ave SE, SE 24th St, and 81st Ave SE. After hours, the roadway will be restored to two-way traffic. Please use caution while driving or cycling on rough roadways and over steel plates.    Residential access will be maintained at all times. Plans for final restoration:

When repairs are complete, crews will backfill the roadway and temporarily restore the roadway surface where the pipe was repaired. Then, crews will restore all disturbed areas based on permit conditions agreed upon with the City of Mercer Island. Final paving is weather dependent and will take place during the next permitted paving window, which begins in the spring.

What to expect:

• Approved work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
• All work will be performed in the right-of-way.
• Flaggers will direct single lane alternating traffic during approved work hours.
  • Two-way traffic will be restored after approved work hours.
• Noise, dust, and vibrations typical of an active construction project. 
  • Expect intermittent loud noise during excavation.
• Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.
• Garbage, recycling, composting, and mail service will be maintained.
