Construction crews completed roadway paving, repairing the Discovery Park Boulevard roadway dip! The team has some work left to complete the job, and the road will be fully open between a couple days of finishing touches throughout this month.
Work is expected to take place occasionally through Friday, Feb. 27. Construction crews will need approximately one day to install concrete curbs. Restoring environmental conditions along the roadway will require another day to complete.
-
WHAT:
- Short-term repair of dip in roadway to improve safety and ensure access to West Point Treatment Plant and South Beach area.
- When no work is taking place, both lanes will remain open.
- During work activities, on-site flaggers will maintain vehicle through-traffic
- Sidewalks and trails will remain open at all times.
-
WHEN:
- Approximately one day of work during the week of Feb. 9-13.
- Approximately one day of work during the week of Feb. 23-27.
- Work hours: 8 am to 2 pm
-
WHERE: Discovery Park Boulevard along north side of Capehart Forest (see Figure 1).
Expect construction crews and traffic control devices. This includes cones and signs around the work area. There may be periods of increased noise from equipment and construction vehicles.
What crews have done:
- Stabilized the water force main pipe throughout the project area.
- This involved uncovering the water force main and removing poor dirt material. Gravel-like material was added to stabilize the water force main better.
- Replaced the damaged 12-inch stormwater culvert that crosses the roadway.
- Installed new catch basins on both sides of the road.
- A catch basin is a drain in the ground that collects rainwater and directs it into the stormwater system. This helps prevent flooding in the road.
- Repaved and installed temporary pavement markings along the roadway. (Figures 2 and 3)
What is next:
- Installing concrete curbs and permanent pavement markings along the newly paved road.
- Environmental restoration activities, including planting a native grass mix and replenishing soils in areas that were disturbed by construction.
- WTD is working closely with Seattle Parks & Recreation to replace trees that were removed during construction.
This work is weather-dependent and subject to change.
Thank you for your patience as we work to complete these repairs quickly and safely. Your cooperation helps us keep the project moving and reopen the roadway sooner rather than later.
