King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) is continuing work on Discovery Park Boulevard to repair a dip in the roadway. Construction crews continue making progress and will continue working to reopen the roadway as soon as possible.
With rain coming soon, work is expected to continue for another week through Friday, Feb. 6. Final work activities include restoring environmental conditions and repaving the roadway. Roadway paving is weather dependent and should take place during dry conditions to allow materials to set properly. If paving happens when it's too wet, it can hurt the quality and may require costly repairs.
-
WHAT:
- Short-term repair of dip in roadway to improve safety and ensure access to West Point Treatment Plant and South Beach area.
- One travel lane will be closed, but vehicle through-traffic will be maintained.
- Sidewalks and trails will remain open.
-
WHEN:
- Weekdays through Friday, Feb. 6
- Work hours: 8 am to 2 pm daily
-
WHERE: Discovery Park Boulevard along north side of Capehart Forest (see Figure 1).
Expect construction crews and traffic control devices, including cones and signs, around the work area. There may be periods of increased noise from equipment, such as compaction equipment and construction vehicles.
What crews have done:
- Stabilized the water force main pipe throughout the project area.
- This involved uncovering the water force main, removing poor dirt material, and replacing it with gravel-like material to better stabilize the water force main.
- Replaced the damaged 12-inch stormwater culvert that crosses the roadway.
- Installed new catch basins on both sides of the road (see Figure 2).
- A catch basin is a drain built into the ground that collects rainwater and directs it into the stormwater system to prevent flooding along the road.
What is next:
- Wrap up the road repair and curb construction to fully reopen the road.
- Environmental restoration activities, including planting a native grass mix and replenishing soils in areas that were disturbed by construction.
- WTD is working closely with Seattle Parks & Recreation to replace trees that were removed during construction.
This work is weather-dependent and subject to change.
Thank you for your patience as we work to complete these repairs quickly and safely. Your cooperation helps us keep the project moving and reopen the roadway sooner rather than later.
