Today, Sound Transit announced that light rail will finally open across the I-90 bridge on March 28. This is a transformational moment for all King County residents and especially Eastside communities, which is why I have fought through all the political, logistical, and financial challenges during my entire career as an elected official to deliver this incredible opportunity for my constituents.
When this light rail segment opens, we will have completed all of the transit service promised in the ST2 ballot measure approved by voters. Riders will be able to take light rail from Redmond, Bellevue and Mercer Island to Seattle, SeaTac, UW, and all other stations. This will also mark the first time in the world that light rail will carry passengers across a floating bridge.
I could not be prouder of the thousands of people who have poured their efforts, energy, creativity, and passion into this project over so many years. As the Eastside continues to grow and thrive, this moment represents more than just a transit opening, it demonstrates all this region can achieve when we commit to audacious goals and persevere to get things done. Stay tuned for announcements about Opening Day celebrations and I hope to see you on the train!
