King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) is continuing work on Discovery Park Boulevard to repair a dip in the roadway. Thanks to great progress so far, we’re keeping momentum to reopen the roadway as soon as possible. To stay on track, crews will work this Saturday, January 17, and on Monday, January 19 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day).
-
WHAT:
- Short-term repair of dip in roadway to improve safety and ensure access to West Point Treatment Plant and South Beach area.
- One travel lane will be closed, but vehicle through-traffic will be maintained.
- Sidewalks and trails will remain open.
-
WHEN:
- Saturday, January 17
- Monday, January 19 (MLK Jr. Day)
- Work will continue on Weekdays through Monday, January 26
- Work hours: 8 am to 2 pm daily
-
WHERE: Discovery Park Boulevard along north side of Capehart Forest (see Figure 1).
Expect construction crews and traffic control devices, including cones and signs, around the work area. There may be periods of increased noise from equipment, such as jack hammers and construction vehicles.
What has been done:
Crews have stabilized the water force main pipe about halfway through the project area. This involved uncovering the water force main, removing poor dirt material, and replacing it with gravel-like material to better stabilize the water force main (see figure 2).
What is next:
- Crews will continue similar work to stabilize the remaining section of the water force main.
- Crews will replace the damaged 12-inch stormwater culvert that crosses the roadway.
- Install new catch basins on both sides of the road. A catch basin is a drain built into the ground that collects rainwater and directs it into the stormwater system to prevent flooding along the road.
- Wrap up the road repair and curb construction to fully reopen the road.
Thank you for your patience as we work to complete these repairs quickly and safely. Your cooperation helps us keep the project moving and reopen the roadway sooner rather than later.
