December 2025
King County’s contractor is continuing to prepare work areas for active construction in Bellevue.
Beginning today, Tuesday, Dec. 9, the contractor will have a temporary, southbound single-lane closure on Coal Creek Parkway Southeast between 119th Avenue Southeast and 124th Avenue Southeast. This temporary lane closure will last at least one week, then intermittently through the end of the project.
This lane closure is required so the contractor can safely unload trucks moving materials and equipment for staging at work areas.
What to expect:
-
Traffic impacts: Expect traffic delays. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic. Drivers and cyclists will share a lane when traveling through the work area and are advised to use caution.
-
Work hours: Permitted work hours for the southbound single-lane closure are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday.
-
Construction vehicles will be entering and leaving the work area.
Note: Lane closure area shown on the map is approximate.
The daytime northbound and southbound single-lane closures on Coal Creek Parkway SE will remain in place as construction activities continue. We will provide timely updates on any changes to the expected traffic impacts.
- Permitted work hours for the southbound single-lane closure are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday.
- Permitted work hours for the northbound single-lane closure are 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Note: Lane closure areas shown on the map are approximate.
About this project
Construction for King County Wastewater Treatment Division's (WTD) Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project began this past June. This multi-year project will provide needed wastewater capacity for growing communities in Bellevue and Newcastle.
After the pipe work is completed, the contractor will restore the Coal Creek Natural Area, parking areas, and affected roadways to protect the creek, trails, and infrastructure. The rebuilt Red Cedar Trailhead will retain the same look-and-feel while enhancing accessibility for visitors of all abilities.

Looking inside a wastewater treatment lab
When you flush the toilet or wash your hands in the sink, water travels down the drain to a treatment plant to get cleaned before it can be released back into the environment.
Staff at the South Treatment Plant Lab in Renton test water samples from three of our treatment plants to ensure that the water we return to Puget Sound is clean and safe. They monitor microbes — key organisms that help break down organic waste — as well as nutrient and oxygen levels that can affect our environment and marine life. Join Wastewater Process Analyst Kennedy Tisdel to see the work happening in the lab.
