King County Metro ridership growth second highest among the nation’s largest transit agencies

King County Metro ridership continues to rise, with an estimated 63 million boardings through August 31, an increase of 4.5 million compared to the same period last year. Among the nation’s ten largest transit agencies, Metro recorded the second-highest growth in ridership. 

The new RapidRide G Line led the increase with an 86 percent jump in weekday boardings, growing from 3,600 in September 2024 to 6,700 in September 2025. Metro also saw significant weekday ridership growth systemwide, with more riders boarding buses during morning, midday, and afternoon periods.

Sound Transit announces upcoming planned 1 Line closures

Sound Transit has announced upcoming planned service closures for the Link 1 Line in November and December to allow for essential maintenance, track repairs, and system upgrades. 

The work includes rail replacement, advanced signaling installation, and overnight maintenance to improve long-term reliability and safety. During these periods, bus service will replace trains between affected stations. 

Upcoming closures: 

  • Nov. 18–20: 1 Line service between Capitol Hill and SODO will end early for overnight maintenance. 
  • Dec. 2–4: 1 Line service between Northgate and Capitol Hill will end early for overnight maintenance. 
  • Dec. 12–13: Service will be suspended from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. between Capitol Hill and Stadium to install advanced signaling. 
  • Dec. 20–21: Service will be suspended from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. between Capitol Hill and Stadium to install advanced signaling. 
  • Dec. 27–28: Service will be suspended from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. between Capitol Hill and Stadium to install advanced signaling. 

Bus service will replace trains during all closures. Riders are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Learn more about the planned 1 Line closures and service alternatives. 

Light rail to Federal Way opens December 6

Sound Transit will open the new 7.8-mile Federal Way Link Extension on Dec. 6, 2025, extending light rail service from Angle Lake to new stations in Kent/Des Moines, Star Lake, and downtown Federal Way. 

The extension will improve regional connections and reduce travel times for South King County residents commuting to and from Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport. Sound Transit launches 2025 passenger experience survey

Sound Transit has launched its 2025 Passenger Experience Survey, open now through Dec. 5. The survey invites riders to share feedback in eight languages on accessibility, availability, dependability, cleanliness, safety, passenger care, and maintenance across Link light rail, Sounder trains, and ST Express buses. 

Survey results will help Sound Transit prioritize improvements to service, rider experience, and maintenance. Riders are encouraged to participate to help shape the future of the transit system. Learn more about the survey and how to share your feedback.
