Early morning closure of Coal Creek Parkway SE on Nov. 19 and 20

King County’s contractor is continuing to prepare work areas for active construction in Bellevue.

On Wednesday, Nov. 19 and Thursday, Nov. 20, the contractor will close Coal Creek Parkway SE in both directions, at the Red Cedar Trailhead entrance, intermittently between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.

We encourage drivers to use alternate routes during this closure or be prepared for significant delays on Coal Creek Parkway SE during these hours.

This closure is required so the contractor can safely direct an oversized truck transporting materials and equipment into and out of the Red Cedar Trailhead work area. The lanes will reopen once the truck has entered or exited the trailhead.

What to expect:

  • Traffic impacts: Expect traffic delays. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic. Drivers and cyclists will be directed to wait outside the road closure area while the contractor is directing the oversized truck to enter and exit the work area.
  • Work hours: Permitted work hours for the Coal Creek Parkway SE road closure are 4 a.m. to 6 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19 and Thursday, Nov. 20.

Ongoing daytime single lane closures

The daytime northbound and southbound single lane closures on Coal Creek Parkway SE will remain in place as construction activities continue. We will provide timely updates on any changes to the expected traffic impacts.

  • Permitted work hours for the southbound single-lane closure are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday.
  • Permitted work hours for the northbound single-lane closure are 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Reminder: do not enter construction zones

The Red Cedar trailhead and other work areas are active construction zones and remain closed to all public use. Other trailheads in the area such as the Cinder Mine, Red Town, Coal Creek Family YMCA, and Forest Drive trailheads are available for trail users. Stay out of fenced areas and the creek bank for your safety and to protect the Coal Creek Natural Area and salmon habitat.

About this project

Construction for King County Wastewater Treatment Division's (WTD) Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project began this past June. This multi-year project will provide needed wastewater capacity for growing communities in Bellevue and Newcastle.

After the pipe work is completed, the contractor will restore the Coal Creek Natural Area, parking areas, and affected roadways to protect the creek, trails, and infrastructure. The rebuilt Red Cedar Trailhead will retain the same look-and-feel while enhancing accessibility for visitors of all abilities.
