On Oct. 20, King County Wastewater Treatment Division responded to a wastewater spill in Bellevue.
Around 10:35 a.m., the contractor working on the County’s Heathfield Force Main Rehabilitation Project was draining a section of the 24-inch-wide pipe to make repairs. When they cut open the pipe, the remaining water inside was inadvertently released into the trenched area.
The crew quickly used a vacuum truck to suck up the wastewater, though some of the water drained into the ground. The water was all contained within the 7-foot-deep trench and did not directly enter Vasa (Squibbs) Creek. We are working with the contractor on the cleanup response.
Out of an abundance of caution, the King County Environmental Lab is collecting water samples along the creek this afternoon.
We have notified the regulatory agencies, including Public Health – Seattle & King County, which will evaluate this incident for public health impacts. We will provide an update tomorrow.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not approach workers onsite. This is for your safety and the safety of the crew. Instead, call the Community Services team at (206) 263-4088 and leave a message or email HeathfieldPumpRepair@kingcounty.gov. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
