October 2025
King County’s contractor is continuing to prepare work areas for active construction in Bellevue. Beginning as early as Monday, Oct. 13, the contractor will have temporary, southbound single-lane closures on Coal Creek Parkway SE, north of the Coal Creek Parkway SE and Forest Drive SE intersection. This is required so the contractor can safely unload trucks that are moving materials and equipment for staging at work areas.
The northbound single-lane closure near the Red Cedar Trailhead entrance remains in place as the contractor unloads and stages materials and equipment at the trailhead. We will continue to provide timely updates on any changes to the expected traffic impacts.
-
Traffic impacts: Expect traffic delays. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic. Drivers and cyclists will share a lane when traveling through work areas and are advised to use caution.
-
Work hours: Permitted work hours for the southbound single-lane closure are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday. Permitted work hours for the northbound single-lane closure are 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
-
Trailhead closure: The Red Cedar trailhead will remain closed to all public use during this work. Other trailheads in the area such as the Cinder Mine, Red Town, Coal Creek Family YMCA, and Forest Drive trailheads are available for trail users.
-
Tree removal: The contractor will remove some trees in work areas to stage materials and equipment. Remaining trees in work areas will be protected according to City of Bellevue standards. Trees outside of our work areas will not be removed. At the end of the project, the contractor will restore work areas and at least three new trees will be planted for every tree that was removed.
-
Noise: There will be typical construction noise near work areas.
Note: Lane closure areas shown on the map are approximate.
About this project
Construction for King County Wastewater Treatment Division's (WTD) Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project began this past June. This multi-year project will provide needed wastewater capacity for growing communities in Bellevue and Newcastle.
After the pipe work is completed, the contractor will restore the Coal Creek Natural Area, parking areas, and affected roadways to protect the creek, trails, and infrastructure. The rebuilt Red Cedar Trailhead will retain the same look-and-feel while enhancing accessibility for visitors of all abilities.
