King County Executive Shannon Braddock today announced her 2026-2027 biennial budget proposal totaling $19.7 billion. The budget prioritizes key investments in public safety, housing, and behavioral health while also preventing devastating cuts to critical services thanks to a new revenue source. The budget also prepares King County for uncertainties surrounding future federal funding.
The County faced a General Fund shortfall of $175 million, which would have impacted essential services and programs within the King County Sheriff’s Office, Prosecutor’s Office, court systems, public health, and human services.
To avoid reductions in these critical services, Executive Braddock’s proposal utilizes a small criminal justice sales tax approved by state lawmakers and the King County Council to protect and improve public safety and court system services, provide support for homelessness and behavioral health responses, and expand other critical programs. Additionally, the budget proposal includes efficiencies and maintains investments in proven programs.
“My 2026-2027 budget proposal protects core services to ensure safe, vibrant, and healthy communities where everyone can thrive,” said Executive Braddock. “It also creates efficiencies, invests in proven programs serving those in need, and allows us to prepare for potential rollbacks in federal funding. By proposing a balanced and responsible budget, we are safeguarding our communities, setting a strong foundation for our next Executive, and delivering for the people we serve.”
