Flood Control District Grant Projects – I'm proud to announce $1.8 million awarded to flood reduction projects in District 8. This was made possible by the work of critical community-based organizations, inter-governmental partners, and of course, our incredible Flood Control District Staff. These investments provide much-needed contributions to the resilience of the people living and/or working in flood prone areas.
Projects in District 8 include:
-
Judd Creek flash flood control on Vashon Island: This project will address climate-related stormwater flash in Vashon Island’s largest watershed. The project will use natural climate solutions to reduce the risk of flooding downstream. ($65,000)
-
Duwamish Valley Industrial Greening: A project to address environmental inequities in South Seattle by working with Dirt Corps and partners of the Duwamish Valley Infrastructure Group to design and building community centric green stormwater infrastructure. ($500,000)
-
Flood risk reduction in South Park: This project will develop a green infrastructure project at the South Park Neighborhood Center to reduce flood risks. ($300,000)
-
Duwamish River and Hamm Creek dredging, stream restoration and water quality improvement: This project will involve the dredging and removal of contaminated dredge spoils from the Duwamish River basin in the Hamm Creek estuary. ($500,000)

Councilmanic Water Works Grants
I’m also proud to share that Weld, Villa Comunitaria and the River Access Paddle Program are the recipients of my Councilmanic Water Works grants each receiving $69,1099.65. These funds will go to projects that invest in and help promote clean water and a clean water workforce in District 8.
Update on Youth Homelessness at Health Housing and Human Services Committee - It is not often that we get a report on good news when it comes to homelessness in our region. However, I was thrilled to learn from our providers focused on supporting our young people facing homelessness that the rate of unhoused young people is going down. There has been a 40% decrease! This is due to measures we have taken to keep young people at risk from becoming homeless in the first place. Thank you to North 40 and the YMCA of Greater Seattle for sharing this good news and their full presentation can be found here the 1:08 mark.
We were honored to have Héctor Iván Godoy Priske, the Consul General of Mexico join us in Council.
Thank you to Alejandra Tres of Comunidad, Marco Wanless of the Latino Chamber and Lilliane Ballesteros of the Latino Community Fund for the proclamation of Latino/a/e Heritage Month
It was a very special day in council for me personally as we celebrated not only Mexican Independence Day but also proclaimed September 15th - October 15th Latino/a/e Heritage Month on behalf of Executive Braddock. As the first member of King County Council of Mexican American Heritage and along with Councilmember Barón as the first Latinos it was an incredible honor to welcome the Consul General of Mexico and community partners. This is especially impactful given D8's demographics. At least 14% of the population is Latino/a/e and South Park has the largest Latino/a/e population of any Seattle neighborhood. Not to mention White Center also has one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the region including a sizeable Latino/a/e population. I'm also very glad that Alejandra Tres from Comunidad was able to join us ensuring la gente de vashon were well represented.
We also took the opportunity to proclaim September as Recovery Awareness Month and awarded the 2025 King County Recovery Champion award to Heather Venegas the Director of the King County Recovery Coalition. Many in our community struggle with addition and Heather's story is a testament that there isn't always a straight path to recovery but with the right support and determination it is possible. Congratulations Heather for a well deserved recognition for you work showing others a path through their darkest days.
Waterfront Opening Celebration - The new Waterfront isn’t just fun for the whole family, it’s a massive multi-agency, public-private partnership over more than a decade that brought us to this moment. It shows that we can still do big things! I joined thousands this past weekend to officially open this new destination that showcases what our region has to offer. Thank you to Friends of Waterfront Park for hosting such an incredible event for an incredible space.
Thank you to Highline School Board Vice President Stephanie Tidholm for joining in on the learning fun!
Burien Environmental Science Center – This incredible community gem is nestled along the beachwalk at Seahurst Park and provides environmental education programs for all ages at local beaches, streams, forested areas, and school gardens throughout south King County. Check out their calendar of public events and maybe I’ll see you at a low tide event this fall!
I got the opportunity to present the proclamation in Honor of Mexican Independence Day at Town Hall as part of the El Grito Ceremony hosted by the Consulate of Mexico in Seattle. It was incredible to join with Govenor Ferguson, Attorney General Nick Brown and Deputy Mayor of Seattle Greg Wong in this celebration.

Sound Transit Press Conference – I joined Mayor Bruce Harrell, other elected leaders and community members calling for Sound Transit to move forward building the West Seattle Light Rail extension and the Ballard extension. In the face of mounting costs, the most affordable time to build these necessary infrastructure projects is right now. Our message is clear, Build it All!

Route 8 - Route 8 Upd8 (get it? Haha?)
Since I have held elected office, I have heard from countless constituents who (try to) rely on Metro bus route 8 that it is in dire need of improvements. While I have shared updates from Metro in the past, Seattle Department of Transportation recently shared on their blog an update on their share of the improvements needed – on the roads:
“What is SDOT doing to address travel reliability, both now and in the future? Here’s a quick summary of our plans, in a nutshell:
-
Preserving Denny Way service in the near term: We’re committed to maintaining Route 8 service along Denny Way – an essential corridor serving major employers, the Seattle Center, and a future light rail station.
-
Advancing near-term spot improvements and a long-term vision: We’ll implement upgrades near Queen Anne and passenger-focused investments at the eastern end of the corridor, while exploring future options like dedicated bus lanes once key congestion issues are addressed (see details later in this blog).
-
Tackling congestion and partnering for solutions: We’ll prioritize strategies to reduce southbound I-5 traffic impacts on Denny Way, including alternate routing and wayfinding. We’ll continue working with large employers to encourage transit use and harness future Revive I-5 construction to test and learn from new traffic patterns.
Here are some concrete steps to help improve travel for everyone:
-
In 2025, add a right turn restriction from Westlake Ave onto Denny Ave (near Whole Foods).
-
In 2026, add a transit turn-only lane from Queen Anne Ave to Denny Way (a couple blocks southwest of Climate Pledge Arena) and an eastbound bus-and-turn lane on Denny Way between Queen Anne Ave and 2nd Ave (near the Pacific Science Center).
-
Assess and develop options to distribute some general-purpose traffic off Denny Way with improved wayfinding, signal timing, turn restrictions, and changes to lane markings.”

Did you Know you Need License to be a Meat Cutter in King County?
Find out more about meat cutting aprenticeships by clicking this picture.
If you cut fresh beef, veal, lamb, and/or pork within a King County meat establishment, you are required to obtain an annual occupational Meat Cutter license, which requires you to study and pass the Meat Cutter exam.
The Meat Cutter exam checks for basic skills of meat cutting, handling, care, and knowledge of sanitation and code requirements. You will need to pass the exam to get your meat cutter license.
Luckily, WeTrain Washington offers a two-year program to get your apprentice meat cutter license while you prepare for your meat cutter exam.
