This project will reline approximately 2.6 miles of old concrete sewer pipe ranging from 18 to 36 inches wide. Crews will also repair 45 maintenance holes, install new maintenance holes and over 100 sewer connections to homes and businesses. During construction, wastewater will be rerouted through a temporary pipe so crews can safely work inside the existing pipe without interrupting service. To help reduce impacts to the community, the contractor will be installing noise and odor control at key spots in the sewer diversion system.
This summer/fall, the project team will complete Phase 1 of the repair work of about 0.6 miles of Zones 18, 24, and some sections of Zone 30 on M Street Northeast, starting from the intersection on 14th Street Northeast to south of 22nd Street Northeast. The construction of Phase 2 of the remaining portion of Zone 30 and the full length of Zone 36 is scheduled for summer 2026.
This project:
- Extends the service life of the sewer pipe working for your neighborhood for another 50 years.
- Minimizes disruptions from future emergency repairs or overflows.
- Protects water quality in our region.

- Construction can begin in late August. Work hours are generally weekdays from 7 am to 5 pm in most streets and 9 am to 3 pm on M Street. Working occasionally on weekends and at night will allow the work to finish sooner. We will notify you when weekend or night work is scheduled.
- Wastewater service will be maintained during construction by a temporary diversion pipe. You will be able to use your sinks, toilets, and showers normally.
- Driveway access will be maintained using a ramp and/or a buried temporary diversion pipe. Once the work is completed, the diversion pipe will be removed, and driveways, impacted streets, and sidewalks will be restored.
- Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.
- Garbage and mail delivery services will be maintained.
- Expect traffic detours, equipment staging, lane and sidewalk closures and detours.
- Noise and odor from the temporary pumping system and other construction activities.
- Street parking restrictions.
Construction is disruptive. King County’s goal is to complete construction efficiently to minimize disruptions to the community.
