Your Weekly Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

In March, the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) announced plans to reduce minimum staffing in its North and Southeast Precincts, negatively impacting unincorporated communities. I was extremely displeased with this decision, which was implemented despite my clear objections. These cuts to KCSO deputies were made as a direct result of the previous Executive’s budget reduction targets, and an unwillingness to prioritize public safety in the current year.

However, after a lot of hard work, I am proud to announce that I successfully worked alongside Councilmember Sarah Perry to secure additional funding in our most recent budget to reverse this staffing reduction in unincorporated communities. I was also able to include a study on appropriate staffing levels in the future.

This is a welcome fix to a problem that never should have existed in the first place. Unincorporated communities should not have to fight just to preserve normal staffing levels at the Sheriff’s Office—nor should they bear the burden of budgeting failures beyond their control. It shouldn’t have ever come to this, but I am happy for these public safety resources to be returned to our communities where they belong.

I want to thank Councilmember Perry for leading with me to champion this issue. I’m also thankful for all my colleagues who joined us in restoring appropriate levels of staffing that our residents deserve.
