Update: Final paving and restoration activities planned on SE 22nd St, SE 22nd Pl, 78th Ave SE, and SE 24th St as early as August 7
Expect single lane alternating traffic and driveway impacts
|
|
|
Starting as early as August 7, crews will begin paving and restoration activities on Southeast 22nd Street, Southeast 22nd Place, 78th Avenue Southeast, and Southeast 24th Street.
Grinding the roadway
Crews will first grind the roadway to create a flat surface for paving. Grinding is expected to be completed in one day, with driveway access maintained. Residents may hear increased noise and experience vibrations during grinding. Please plan for up to 20 minutes for crews and equipment to complete grinding work in front of your driveway for access.
Crews will start work on one side of the road before switching to the other. Single lane alternating traffic will be in place along SE 22nd St, SE 22nd Pl, 78th Ave SE, and SE 24th St during this work. Please drive slowly and pay attention to signage and flaggers.

During this time, the roadway will be rough and unfinished until paving is complete. Please drive slowly!

Paving impact and temporary
closures
Once grinding is complete, crews will begin paving the road as early as August 8. Paving is expected to be completed in one day and needs a few hours to cure.
During paving, crews may need to temporary close the road and redirect traffic around the area.
|
|
 |
|
Once crews begin paving, they cannot stop or allow cars to drive on the newly
paved roadway.
|
Paving restores the road for safe passage after construction.

Parking advisory
During this time, driveways will be inaccessible for three to four hours while the pavement cures. Access to 77th Ave SE will be limited for three to four hours during paving and curing on the south side of SE 22nd St.
"No parking" signs will be in place, and crews will alert residents whose driveways will be impacted on 78th Ave SE and SE 22nd St. If you plan to leave your home during permitted hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on August 8, consider parking at the Mercer Island Park & Ride. If you have access concerns, please contact the Community Services team at 425-305-3578 or NMEsewer@kingcounty.gov.
Driveway apron restoration
Our project team determined that some driveway aprons (the segment of driveway that connects to the street or sidewalk) along the east side of 78th Ave SE would need to be restored. Crews will restore all driveway aprons on the side of the road where the sewer pipe was excavated and repaired.
What to expect during construction:
- Approved work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
- There is no planned overnight work for permanent repaving in this area.
- All work will be performed in the public right-of-way.
- Noise, dust, and vibrations typical of an active construction project.
- Grinding will create additional noise and vibrations.
- There will be parking restrictions on both sides of the roadway.
- Crews will place "no parking" signs on both sides of the roadway for the duration of this work.
- Flaggers and single-lane alternating traffic during work hours.
- Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.
- Garbage, recycling, composting, and mail service will be maintained.
- If services are interrupted, please call the project hotline at 425-305-3578.
