As we end the month of June and begin July, we can look forward to a number of upcoming family events and activities in District 5 – from World Refugee Day at Foster High School (June 28 - Tukwila) and Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on June 28 in Renton to free admission at the Museum of Flight on Thursday July 3 from 5 – 9 pm.

I went to Washington D.C. this week with my county colleagues and met with member of the congressional delegation. In these times of uncertainty, we all need to focus on our county and our nation and what we need to do to keep it a great place to live.

The goal of the D5 e-news is to share information about council business, upcoming community events, access to services, opportunities, and ways for us to build an even better King County.
On Friday, June 20, I joined my colleagues in Committee of the Whole to hear presentations about potential impacts tariffs may have to our economy. We also heard from Southside Seattle about current economic trends in the hospitality and tourism industry which is of particular importance to communities in District 5. On Saturday, I spoke at the Kent Black Action Commission Juneteenth celebration in Kent. Thank you to KBAC and Gwen Allen-Carston for keeping this celebration going and for making room for healing and joy.
On Tuesday, I joined my council colleagues for our annual 3-day trip to Washington D.C. to meet with our congressional delegation about issues affecting King County. I prepared to speak about federal funding for transit service and public health services. We also spoke about ensuring that local governments are able to follow and defend laws governing civil rights and equality despite Executive Orders to the contrary.

the importance of federal transit funding for King County Metro service.

On Wednesday, we had a series of meetings on the hill. The first was with U.S. Senator Patty Murray where we discussed how federal funding for transit service will help us expand service to people and help us address climate change. I shared stories with Senator Murray about how federal funding cuts are impacting South King County residents in District 5.

We then discussed King County priorities including affordable housing with U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene. We later met with U.S. Representative Adam Smith and discussed federal funding for public health services in King County.

On Thursday, our day began with a meeting with U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (photo left). We also met with U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (photo right) and then U.S. Representative Kim Schrier and also with staff to the National Association of Counties (NACo) before flying home.
King County Councilmembers Jorge Baron and De’Sean Quinn met with
US Representative Kim Schrier and had discussions about
healthcare and housing stability.
My staff attended the Sound Transit Board meeting in my absence where the Board reviewed and approved the At-Grade Crossings Master Plan to improve safety. The Board also discussed the preferred route for the Tacoma LINK extension EIS.
On Friday, my team and I prepared for the week ahead.
