Your Weekly Update on What's Happening at the King County Council

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Back in March, the King County Council approved legislation that I brought forward in partnership with Councilmember Balducci and at the request of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 587. This legislation created a transit safety task force to work on restoring safety to our public transit system following the devastating death of Metro operator Shawn Yim in December 2024 after he was attacked by a transit rider.

Though the circumstances that spurred action on increasing public safety on transit are tragic, I am pleased to be able to report that the Transit Safety Taskforce has already has success with ushering in reform.

King County Metro is currently testing four types of safety partitions for bus drivers as part of a pilot program. These partitions are intended increase driver protection from assaults while maintaining passenger accessibility and comfort. Ultimately, every King County Metro bus in the county's fleet of approximately 1,400 buses will have the partition installed.

Though I am eager to see a more comprehensive approach to safety on transit and around transit stations, I am pleased to be able to report this progress. I look forward to seeing more safety reforms come from the work of the Transit Safety Taskforce.

All my best,

Dunn-signature
