Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last year, Washington was hit with a once-in-a-generation bomb cyclone that left communities without power, homes inhabitable, and critical infrastructure severely damaged. However, FEMA recently denied, without explanation, Washington State’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration, which would have provided our community with millions of dollars in funding we need to recover.

In response, my colleague Councilmember Sarah Perry and I sent a letter to the Acting Administrator of FEMA urging the agency to reverse this shortsighted and harmful decision. In doing so, we joined a growing bipartisan group of elected officials, including Governor Bob Ferguson and the entire Washington Congressional delegation, in supporting for Washington’s application for a federal emergency declaration.

Helping citizens recover from natural disasters of this extreme magnitude is precisely the reason FEMA exists as an agency. Given the overwhelming bipartisan support for this necessary disaster relief, it is extremely disappointing to see the original application denied. Councilmember Perry and I stand with our fellow elected leaders across Washington in confidence that all the criteria to qualify for federal funds have been indisputably met.

All my best,
