King County Metro: Full fare inspection returns May 31

Remember to pay

In March 2025, , King County Metro Fare Enforcement Officers began asking riders for proof of fare payment on buses and streetcars. Friendly, verbal reminders were given to riders who did not pay.

Starting May 31, fare inspection will fully resume. At that time, riders who do not have valid proof of payment will receive a written warning instead of a verbal reminder. Riders can receive two of these written warnings without consequence. However, third and subsequent citations may result in a fine or an alternative resolution.

To avoid a warning or fine, all cardholders must tap their ORCA card when boarding any regional transit service. Even with a monthly pass or e-purse loaded on the card, the card must be tapped to ensure the trip is recorded. As a reminder, monthly PugetPasses are valid up to the trip value of the pass. Please have e-purse loaded to the card in advance if the cardholder will ride a service with a higher fare than their pass trip value.

Additionally, a monthly pass or additional e-purse balance must be purchased before the first day of every month to avoid any interruptions in card validity. Learn more about the return of fare enforcement.

In addition, westbound fares from Seattle to Kitsap on the Bremerton, Kingston and Southworth fast-ferry routes will increase by $1, from $12 to $13. Learn more about the Kitsap Transit fare transfer policy change.
