If you are registered to vote, you should have received a ballot for a special election. The item up for consideration is the regional Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), which would fund the continued operation of the AFIS program to provide enhanced forensic fingerprint and palmprint technology and services. The proposal is a seven-year property tax levy of 2.75 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.
Election Day is April 22. Ballots must be postmarked by April 22 or returned to a ballot drop box by 8:00 pm that day. If you need assistance voting, you can visit the vote center at King County Elections (919 SW Grady Way, Renton). If you are eligible to vote but not registered yet, you can register in-person up until 8:00 pm on Election Day at King County Elections, online 8 days in advance of Election Day, or by mail as long as Elections receives the registration at least 8 days in advance of Election Day.
On Tuesday, I was pleased to sponsor a proclamation for Vaisakhi Day, along with Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer. Vaisakhi is one of the most significant celebrations in the Sikh community, marking both the harvest festival and the establishment of the Khalsa in 1699, a pivotal moment in Sikh history that symbolizes sovereignty, justice, and devotion. King County is home to the seventh largest Sikh community in any county in the United States and they are an integral part of our region. Sikh community members from across the county joined us for the presentation and it was a wonderful opportunity to honor and celebrate our Sikh neighbors.
